Thanks I was wondering because this car was a one owner car when I got it, I bought it off a little old lady that bought it brand new and it was completely original when I got it and I ddidn' think grandma would have been under the car sprrsing undercoat! And I know I didnt! Haha
If I clean it good with soap and water do you think paint would stick to it? I dont want to take the time and effort to remove it!
 
it's a ***** to remove, especially laying under the car. pressure wash it. anywhere it comes off or you see surface rust, hit it with rustolium primer and paint, then reapply undercoating

Good progress! I've had pretty good luck solvent wiping with mineral spirits and top coating with flat black. If it’s sticking I'd only remove it where you are going to weld. Touch up with the rattle can stuff.
 
There is always that one nut that has to be a PITA! The everything else came off easy I was surprised. Although these ubolts have been replaced before so they wasnt super rusty but this one made it all the way to the end and got stuck I ended up bringing out the breaker bar and it twisted it off.

I'd say you did good to save any of them. EVERY one twisted off when we swapped my son's 7.25. I used ones from an 8.8.

Yea this is the 2nd time iv done these. The first time I had to cut them off with an angle grinder. These weren't no where near as bad as the first time lol.
 
Here is a couple places I have to give some attention to. I have to fix these holes in the firewall. Apparently the hole where the ballist resistor is mounted got stripped and they drilled exactly holes to remount it. Also found a rust hole where the firewall meets the cowl right in the very corner beside the hole were the hood release cable goes thru. And a rust thru spot under the battery tray.

I got a little redneck rust repair done this morning. That bad spot in the inner fender is taking care of. I took a stripping wheel got it good and clean with some acetone and fiberglass patched it on the outside. I'm gonna let it harden and cure and then bondo the inside and block it smooth.
Question what's the easiest way to plug these holes in the firewall? I tried jbweld but it's too runny in just slid out the back it would stay put. I'm scared to try and cut it out and weld a patch in. But I can't get to the back to block the holes off to have anything to weld too to fill them. Help please lol

Thanks what would be the best way to weld the holes? Typically I would weld a piece to the back and fill up the hole but there is no way to back it. I dont think my welding skills are quite on par to fill a blind hole haha
 
you can do it with a mig. turn it way down if yours doesn't auto adjust. have the wire feed turned up a little. need to experiment but you want to keep the nozzle moving and the wire needs to keep up. keep doing laps around the edge pulling the puddle in a little each time.
also, the nylon cup brushes on a die grinder will take the undercoating off great. but wear a mask, and eye protection. and not one of those POS paper ones, but one with real filters that can be changed.

Sure they are. In fact this is good for us dummies. All you're trying to do is plug a hole. Little zap. Let it cool. Little zap. Let it cool, etc, etc. Grind it flat. Get a scrap piece and practice first. Which is good advice for any welding project, really.
Now all that being said, get some good video when you set the pile of leaves on fire that you, like most of us, store in our cowl. haha.

I done some more striping this morning and attempted to weld the holes closed....EPIC FAIL!!!
I don't know if it's my cheap harbor freight welder or just my lack of welding skills but it looks worse now! Lol. No matter what I did it would just blow a hole straight through it. My welder only has a high and low adjustment and a wire speed control. I put it on low and the wire on 1 and it still melted thru it. I attempted to just tack around the hole the build it up and it would still burn a hole. I guess I'm just gonna cut out the entire section out and try to piece it back in. I think its gonna be a challenge to get it tacked in place without cutting thru it. I think I'm gonna practice on my old truck door! Haha
 
Takes a bit of practice to make and break the arc, let cool, and repeat. I have the same machine and it is doable. I want one of the eastwood welders real bad though.

What setting do you use for sheet metal on your Hf?
 
Low and I actually speed up the feed a bit, they also sell a backing tool to help if you have access to back side of hole. Pulls some of the heat away.

Listen to me. Don't practice on your car! Get some scrap to practice on. And yes, I would actually speed the wire up............
 
I got some done this morning. I got the holes in the firewall patched its not finished but it's no longer a hole! I forgot to take pictures. I will get some later.
 
Got some more work done today. Look no more holes!! Now I just gonna continue sanding then epoxy primer!
