So I’ve been driving a 2012 Volkswagen golf diesel manual for a few years. It was certified preowned. Recently the engine lost power and I took it to the shop. You guessed it! High pressure fuel pump is out and to replace everything is like $6000. I only owe 12 on it. I think instead of fixing this car I may just junk it and get some thing a little older that I can work on myself if it breaks down. $6000 to replace a fuel pump is ridiculous. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a good, used, cheap, and reliable car or truck. Preferably a truck as I would like to eventually be able to haul and pull things. I saw this 1978 Dodge truck online for $7000. One owner and only 58,000 miles. I do drive quite a bit for work.

That’s a good looking truck.

Keep in mind that a truck will get less fuel economy than the VW... :steering: :BangHead:

a 78 with only 58k for 7 grand? It's a nice looking truck, but buyer beware. IF it's legit, it's a nice one, but like krazykuda said... your MPG will suffer.

5.2 mag early Dakota

modern but relatively easy to work on

16 MPG with 3.55 rear

nice ones for under $3500

I'd do some more research on the VW. Did you take it to a dealer or a independent shop? Dealers handle things way differently, like if the valve cover leaks they will just replace engine or if the Radiator is bad they will jack up the radiator cap and dive a new car under it. $12k owed on a car your going to scrap seems hard to swallow.

Doing a quick search that was a known problem with VW and they extended the warranty, did a buy back, etc.

I bet that truck is a scam or there is more the story.

If you have to have more MPG from a Dakota, 3.19 gears are available, or the 3.9 is an option.

The ones my family has had are hit or miss on power.
A few have been almost as much as the 5.2 but some have been very anemic.

18 MPG for the 3.9 with 3.55 rear.

Not sure what the 3.19 gears do.

They are also extremely easy to find parts for.

The cons are a poor heater core plumbing design and all mfg transmissions from those years are a dice roll.
Mine has been fine, though.

I agree on being hard to stomach scrapping a car I owed 12K on.

So you need help with a reliable used car, and you show a picture of a truck. So what is it you need, a car or a truck ? You want reliable ? I'm thinking Toyota or Honda.

I'm thinking Hyundai or Kia. What are you going to do, just let the VW go back to the bank. You can't roll over 12k.

the best vehicular investment i ever made was a 2008 dodge charger
i paid 11K for it in 09 with 80K on the clock
it sits in the garage as we speak with 170K on it

in that time i replace 2 O2 sensors, 2 CV axles and 16 plugs
(and a few gallons of engine oil)

I Love my Mopar Muscle cars but my daily driver is a 2008 Buick Lunerne w/3800 V6. Every manufacturer makes good ones and bad ones. I would recommend doing some research on the most reliable highest quality vehicles regardless of manufacturer. This may help you decide. JMO 65'

I did take it to an independent shop first. They ran their test on it and it came up as the fuel system. The guy there told me as well that it would be three to $5000 to replace because apparently you have to replace the entire fuel system. His problem was that the parts are hard to come by for an independent shop because they’re not making them anymore. The dealership said $6000 and they can get parts no problem.

In my post I actually said car or truck. Ultimately I’d like something I can tow with and haul as well. But I’ve also heard that some older Subarus are really reliable and last a long time. I just want something that’s going to be durable and last a long time and then I can actually work on. Something that’s not totally computer controlled

If he scraps a car he owes money on, he's goin to jail.
Yeah, I need to stop trying to think of finding a deep lake to drive it into. LOL interesting thing is my son had a nightmare a few weeks ago that he would never see me again. I asked him how that would happen and he said I was in jail.

Haha-jail- I cant believe the price for that fix-wow!
I know, I mean seriously stupid funny. I looked up the kit that cost $2600 and looks like about the amount that would fit in half of a shoebox.

Thank you so much for this post. Man, I don’t know why in society today it’s hard to remember that we can actually fix things ourselves. I didn’t even think about looking up the kit on my own.

I'm really surprised that there isn't a class action suit over this and there may have been. A lot of post with "I have 80k and owe $14k on a brick"
