Someone please tell me the name of the black putty stuff that you use to seal around the air conditioning lines (typically at firewall penetrations). It usually has a fiber material in it; it doesn't harden but stays tacky. I know what I want, but I don't know the name of it to ask for it at the hardware store or auto parts store.:realcrazy::realcrazy:

Butyl, stop buy the local auto glass shop and ask them for a foot or two strip off a roll.

napa has it but it is a 20-25 ft roll. i can get the part number if needed. it is in the garage.

I use 3M putty. Always called it dum dum. Even Baby Pink Nose knows what dum dum is.

We used to use a cork impregnated roll/ tape sealer in HVAC/R made FOR refer lines. I don't remember off hand the brand or name.

Here is one type

Cork Tape - VAPCO Company - Innovating HVACR for more than 65 years

The reason you want insulated refrigerant lines to be as water / air tight as possible is that condensation can wick into and capillary up into and under the insulation. This is especially important with freezers because it will freeze, expand, and build up
