Howdy. I have recently acquired a vehicle with this 340 w/ X heads in it. Date code says early 340, not sure about other codes...
Anyone have any ideas what vehicle this came out of? Does it have value? I appreciate your expertise everyone.

It is pretty valuable = How much depends on overbore and condition
Thank you, do those #s give any clues as to what it came out of? I'm going to guess it's in average condition. Been sitting for 30 years but she runs nicely. Filthy and needs every gasket and seal replaced.

I'm guessing the one set of numbers is from the drivers side cylinder deck just below the head. There may be some numbers off of a pad on the passengers side oil pan rail, too. And there should be a date cast in the block, too. @Alaskan_TA

Look just above the oil pan rail on the passenger's side of the block, about half way down the length. There will be a partial VIN stamped on a machined flat pad. Post that number and someone will tell you what it came from. @Alaskan_TA is really sharp on this stuff.

Thank you RRR appreciate it.

Sho nuff. Do us all a favor when you find out that number and post it in the lost and found. Although you may not have it for sale, someone may be looking for their original engine and would probably give you a premium for it should it match their car.

I will for sure, I have read that since it's an early '68, cast in '67, there may not be that number stamped above the oil pan rail....??

It might not be. I would still look, because with Chrysler, you never know. lol

Y'all must be on 3rd shift like my wife. Even though we're retired, she stays up most of the night and sleeps all day.

The D indicate the series, 1968 model year in this case.

No lower VIN pad back then.

'68 engine stamps were not used all the time so -if- it is stamped, it will be on the top of the bell flange at the back of the engine.

340s were only used in Barracudas & Darts back then.

Killer engine to come up with, BTW. They didn’t call them a giant killer for nothing! What kind of vehicle did the engine arrive to you installed in?

This is why I come here. Thank you so much.

Looks like a fun project, one thing to keep in mind 340s are a short stroke motor that do their best work in light vehicles. That being said it would still be a really cool combo to put together but you may be able to buy a nicely built 360 for what you could get out of that 340 without touching it .stroking the 340 is another option and it'll do anything you want it to at that point but the price definitely starts going up. Good luck with the build!

I bought it for the engine, but now kinda want to see if at least I can make it street-worthy without costing me a marriage, if I can't the engine can buy my next project. Thanks very much!

I've had my 340 through three marriages three kids and six grandkids. Sure am glad I kept the 340 LOL

Priorities, Lolol!
 But done right, they really are that good. Here’s a little Aussie celebration of 340 power. My first encounter with a 340 was in a ‘73 Charger and it pulled just like this car.
