1300 hp mercury comet brake failure crash

-
**** I’ve been driving without a parking brake for years.
I like that you are honest. I mentioned somewhere about the days of driving my 78 Chevy with a bad master cylinder. I thought I could nurse it to work and back for a week, day 1-3 pumping it worked by day 5 I had absolutely no brakes, I limped it home (on the parking brake) and let it sit.

But you don't get "views" doing that. These assholes went out on the street for one reason and one reason only: "VIEWS"
Whether the accident was staged for "more views!" or not, that's what drove these selfish, lazy, self-centered pricks to leave the garage in the first place. I'm only hoping that their assholes never close up after the people in the minivan and other car see that the accident has the potential to be caused intentionally for pride and profit, and lawyer up with attorneys armed with telephone poles wrapped in barbed wire.

I'm really starting to think that American life was better before the internet.

Seeing that stupid asshole bounce his face off the dash made my day. I missed that in the original video. Thank you for sharing!!
I agree why wouldnt you throw your hands up instinctively covering your face? like in a fight?

It takes what it ta

It takes what it takes in torque or HP to maintain a speed with the throttle in a stuck or fixed position on a flat road. If you encounter a hill the speed will decrease because the load is increased and the throttle position stays the same. It doesn't make more torque or hp unless you open the throttle to maintain speed when a hill is encountered. Same would be true for applying the brakes with the throttle in a stuck position. It doesn't matter if it's a slant six producing said horsepower or a motor capable of 1,300 horsepower. The amount of torque or HP the brakes have to overcome is the same. The motor is only producing the torque or hp needed to maintain the speed the stuck throttle is allowing it to achieve.
I've watched the video many times. I think, regardless of what the guy says in the video that "45" was on the conservative side and that he was actually speeding up before the crash.

Whats the general consensus here? I hear alot of kicking the guy when he's down yeah he was dumb, yea he was stupid. how much should he pay? the sue happy crowd are salivating over this. I find that apalling. The Uncle Tony follower crowd are horrible people IMO they don't know **** about **** when it comes to cars or life.

The guy was a negligent moron who does nothing for us fellow muscle car owners and drivers, and yes if it was Uncle Tony I'd say the same thing.
There are alot of people who are crying "sue, sue, sue" as if they think the guy in the smashed minivan isn't being properly compensated. It comes from seeing a nice built car assuming the guy has "money" if it were Uncle Tony in one of his pieces of **** alot of people would be singing a different tune I'm thinking...I think the guy is a fellow car guy, we don't need a half dozen YT videos parroting Uncle Tony about how "stupid " he is. The amount of so called "car people" I've seen bashing this guy on YT is appalling. I wouldn't break bread or drink a beer with any of these sideline accident lawyers.

You are entitled to your opinion but how much does the guy have to pay until you(lets pretend you are an authority) will back off and let him go lick his wounds? and, furthermore would you want an entire internet forum riding your *** into oblivion if you made a mistake also? ( i venture to say you have it out for this guy because you view him as a rich azzhole who should be forced to pay am I close? like said how much? his life, lose his license for life? give you what's left of his car? )

You are entitled to your opinion but you didn't answer the question how much does the guy have to pay until you(lets pretend you are an authority) will back off and let him go lick his wounds?
Thats not up to me. Don't you think he should be held accountable for neglect and ignorance?

I kind of felt the same. I am no automatic expert but,can someone explain why the car would still be pulling in park? shouldn't the valve body have disconnected the trans?

I think he's has paid and is still paying, trying to throw him in jail for what is basically a car accident is over the top, and I wouldn't wish it on him because it will end up that everyone else will go to jail for a car accident. Now, saying he's negligent...I think that would have applied if someone would have gotten killed or parlyzed, maimed etc. . You cant punish the guy for what might have happened no one got killed in the minivan I'm fairly certain i read that somewhere. If the whole internet keeps pushing this "negligence" thing it will come down to ruining the car hobby for everyone. people need to go get laid or something...getting fired up too easily the whole world is effed up after COVID I dont know what it is...but watch out for what you wish for I guess is my point.

I think "it depends" is the answer. Hard to tell from the video if the street is level. It might have a downhill angle going to the light. Plus, did he "leave" it in park all the way to the crash? I thought I saw him pull it out and put it back a time or two, so he may have added insult to injury there. All of "THAT", plus, it could have had some kind of transmission failure as well. If the brakes failed and the throttle was sticking, what else was wrong?

Right, which brings us back to the point that this high profile "accident" makes us all look guilty and could be a bad thing for the hobby in general.

Also, we don't know what happened to the individuals in the van yet......do we? At least I've not seen anything said anywhere. I promise you that lick was enough to break a neck.

I had thought that , I think the noise was the park pawl ratcheting, and I cant be 100% that the act of putting it in park separated the engine and trans through the valve body, I do think most street automatics do though. The act of putting it in park neutrals out the trans through removing the line pressure by the use of the valving if i recall correctly. I went to school for this years ago, but i never became an auto trans guy I'm a 4 speed guy I know some basics of auto, but don t rebuild them.

I'm pretty sure it has to. If not, it would be pulling against the park pawl and would likely breach the pawl when you free revved it in park. Wouldn't you think?

Yeah there are a few copycat Uncle Tony style videos popping up on YT. I feel like they are kicking the guy when he's down. I'm sure he feels bad enough...he is a fellow car guy whether he's stupid or not. For the record I don't think he's stupid, but smart folks sometimes do dumb things I cant explain it. In the video what I saw was panic, you don't make good choices in a panic. I lalso saw someone say he should have stopped when the throttle stuck, that is akin to people who keep driving with the check engine light, yeah it may cause damage but you try and limp it home...I'm not sure there is some rule book that says stop when you have car trouble, but it may be an a states driving regulations. In other words, I think its ok to try and limp a car home legally..or it used to be. I lost forward range in a Chevy turbo 350 trans once, I was less than 10 miles from home, I drove the thing home in reverse in the correct lane. a cop stopped me and said"you may cause problems because you are facing the wrong way.." I said "yeah but i am in the lane for the direction Im going..." I didnt get a ticket but he told me to get it home and leave it there till fixed.

I cannot disagree. We've all done stupid things. We're all human......but dammit man, with 1300hp and splattered all over the internet? That's like eatin some stupid tacos and askin "will you pass the stupid sauce?"

How long was he riding the brakes? He could have shut it down and came to a stop while he still had brakes, but no he kept heading for stopped traffic.

Yeah I'm sure the guy who was driving feels real low right now...that should be enough, but some folks got to ride his nose down into it some more it seems. You have to let them up for air though or bad things happen.

He made bad choices, especially after he went into a panic. I personally never driven a 1300 HP car, but I think he could have shifted to low for engine braking, then killed power, then ditched to the right and even honked the horn to alert those up ahead. i am Monday morning Quarterbacking here...you could see on his face he was panicking as soon as he realized he had no brakes.

Well, I don't like the video. AT ALL. I believe 100% of it's reason was to downplay and act like a "public service announcement" for all us "nobodys" and I'm stickin to it. They're simply trying to make it look like they did "the right thing" in the eyes of any possible prosecution. I don't like that one bit. Nor do I like the blatant FACT that they left out any and all information about the people they hit. I don't care what their reasons were. Makes them look like a couple of narcissistic assholes....because they are.

He just flat LIED about having to put the shifter in park to downshift. We ALL know that. He's a scumbucket.

I can agree there. Its like YT videos, ever notice everyone has to show their mug in them? everyone is a personality...how about first person show the situation presented and less talk... YT is sort of the driving force behind what happened, they could have done a walkaround shoot, but the guy needed rolling footage like jay lenos garage.

Who said anything about jail? Your only negligent if you kill someone? Have a nice day.
Build your case then...where is your victim what are you asking for in damages..."the car had a mechanical failure and my client was limping it home your honor.. "now what's your rebuttal? "Where does it say in California statute, that my client has to stop and get a tow?"... "I believe it is within my clients right to limp his car home your honor...and my client is willing to compensate the vehicle owner for all damages your honor..." this is about how it will sound in court. Opinions not backed by precedents and statutes are opinions...this is why citizens cant say what should happen in legal matters, perceived stupidity isn't a crime. if it were wed all be in jail.
