His approach to stuff like that differs from mine.
I start going after the SSR earlier in the testing.
The bigger valve and larger throat just exacerbates the shortcomings of the SSR.
 
I do remember him saying earlier in the video series that these heads would get more like a home garage type port job. Maybe that’s why he’s hesitant to go after the ssr, most guys steer clear of messing with it.
 
IMO, he’s already pretty well past what 90% of the typical “home porter” will tackle.

The guy who I got my first tutoring from was big into tackling the SSR early on.........so that probably helped form my process for doing it that way.

Charlie is all about probing and speeds, so I’m sure he knew that if the bigger valve increased the flow, then the already marginally too fast speeds at the SSR would get pushed over the edge.

He really needs to cut the diameter down to fit the small 1.970 inch seat.
The overhang will kill flow.

Not worth a race build, just good enough for a snappy street 5.9L

If I wanted stock iron look, I'd grind the edges and rough shot pein the outsides of an alumimn head and paint it engine color. 15 feet away look.

In any case, I’m enjoying the videos, and don’t have to clean up the filings after each step in the process.
 
The videos are discussions about what’s been done, along with the planned next step, and with accompanying detailed flow results.
Not really much actual footage of “porting”.

Overall, I think he does a pretty good job with them.

Even with the Edelbrock 360 gasket, the port alignment on the heads isn’t very good.

I’d be curious to know how much different the bolt holes and the bottom of the intake ports are, as measured from the bottom of the head, between those Chinese EQ’s with the LA bolt pattern......compared to an original factory LA 360 head.
 
Well, I’m going to make another “armchair head porter” comment.

For the last few steps, Charlie has bounced back and forth between .500 and .600 lift for where he’s checking his air speeds.

This is fundamentally wrong, if you’re trying to compare the results with each other........ but its really an issue with these particular heads since the peak flow happens in the .500 lift range....... and then the flow takes a big dive after that point......... and the flow is noticeably lower by .600.

So naturally, since the flow is higher at .500 lift, the speeds are also higher.

Imo, what he should have been doing there is testing the speeds at both .500 and .600 lift.

Well, IMO he’s reached the point(probably a few steps ago) where he’s chasing that glory number at .500 lift.

The flow at that point hasn’t really improved in the last several “cuts”.
And the stuff above and below .500 is only changing a couple cfm here and there, and not always for the better.

Here’s my(likely to be unpopular) view........
The port is just “too small” to be flowing 270+.
And the speeds prove that out.
The basic shape of the port isn’t conducive to being able to allow the flow to be 270, and still get that column of air to negotiate the SSR without separation.
And, it’s not going to(imo).

I feel that as far as making power is concerned, if the port flowed around [email protected] lift, and then just stayed there at higher lifts, it would make just as much power as if it showed a 270cfm peak @.500, then dropped off to 250....... like it does now.

It would make for an interesting test......... but that’s just another one that will never happen.

Again, I’m glad I’m not the one making the chips on that job.
Plus, he’s still plugging away at it...... so he might figure something out to help the flow up top and prove me wrong.

When I last spoke with Charlie, the owner of the heads said;

“Maximum effort.”

I believe (don’t know 100% for sure) Charlie was thinking what PHR said.
 
I don’t take on any “maximum effort” jobs.

I like there to be a light and the end of the tunnel.

As I’ve said in the past......... my preference is “the most(flow)........for the least(work).
Especially with iron.

Off topic but this is why I Dont offer Edelbrock heads with 2.08 valves very often. These heads get so touchy over 320cfm that they need extra time. I can’t offer that at 850.00
