Looking for a complete 1971 slant 6 225. I've noticed that 1971 cars all were junked and no 1971 slant six engines exist anymore, but I'm shooting for the moon. Preferably the engine would be in the northeast U.S. so I could drive and pick it up.

How do I tell for sure it's a 71? I never have figured out the stamped codes on the block ledge. I think I have one, but I don't want to part with it since it's a 225 and I don't have very may. I have a pile of 170s. Does it ALL have to be 71 or just the block?

I'm not sure about the date code. If I remember, it's something to do with the stamp on the lip behind the coil. I'll have to look into that and get back to you.

Regarding the year, I was hoping for a complete and correct drop-in engine, or one that was "running when pulled" 20 years ago, so it doesn't need too much piecing together...

Yeah, keep wishin upon a star. lol I do know how to read the cast in date codes, so I can look. But like I said, I don't want to get rid of it if I do have one. That doesn't mean I won't take another 225 in trade if I do have one. All I care about it that it's a 225. I don't know why you're so hung up on this. A 225 is a 225 from 68 to 76 when they went to the cast crank and even then there aren't many differences. I'd understand better if you were looking for the exact engine. Then it makes more sense. There's no matching 71 engine except for ONE and your chances of winnin the powerball are better than finding THAT.

Ya, I agree. I'm not looking for the matching numbers engine, only a '71 engine. Slant six engines are for sale all over the internet for cheap, but none are 1971's for some reason.. Oh well, I'll keep looking, thanks.

Do you want me to dig through my pile?

I've been reluctant about posting this due to the distance away from you...
But if you're not in a big hurry, I'll be pulling the 225 out of my 71 Swinger soon, but not until late winter/early spring, to do a 340 swap.
It's runs good, but she's a little tired.
I was actually considering rebuilding it before I post it for sale.
If you're interested let me know, and I'll keep you informed.

Tom, Why do you insist on a 71 engine? Basically the only whay to tell a 71 engine from a 69 to 75 engine is by the numbers stamoed on the deck surface near the #1 spark plug. If the engine was ever rebuilt, and the deck cut to true it up, those numbers would be gone.

Well the block color changed from some years to others, and as the years chugged on, more and more emissions stuff was attached to the manifolds/plumbing/etc. I'm not up on all the changes from year to year, but I'm sure there were a bunch of them (air cleaner type, hose clamp type, etc..). I'm just looking for an engine that was correct for a '71.

Here's my 71...

If the price is right, I’ll take my whole 71 drive train out of my 71 duster and sell it to you. I’m in Georgia so you would need to take a road trip. Man I hate the sound of my own voice on videos. I have the yankee Boston accent mixed with 10yrs of southern influence my voice has a damn identify crisis, Damn trans-vocalist what the hell. J/k! Well anyway here is a video with it running pointing out honest flaws on my own car. I hadn’t had this one long. Since December last year. Still learning it and working on it.

It's nice, it wouldn't have far to go to be fully restored..
