I have a new blueprint engines 408 in my 70 duster that has right at 500 miles on it. Running a new 22" cold case radiator with 6 blade mech fan and shroud. Engine has a 180 thermostat. On the highway the temp stays right at 190 but in traffic it spikes to about 220 in 85 degree day.

Since it looks to be a low speed airflow problem, what is the best elec fan for 22" CC radiators?

Is your fan somewhere in the 50% in the shroud and 50% out? What's your static timing and have you tried richening the idle circuit to see if it may be too lean at idel?

Ford Contour dual electric fan. It’s about 24” wide if you chop the ears off of it. Best cooling investment I ever made. That and a CVF water pump.

What years?

The ‘95-2000 Ford Contour fan isn’t a good choice for a 22” radiator. The fans and shroud are 26” wide. I have one on the 26” radiator in my Duster.

The other issue is the depth. The cold case radiator is pretty thick, and the contour fans are 3” deep from the core to the shroud and 3.5” to the back of the motors. I’ve checked the measurements on the 26” cold case and there wasn’t enough room

I think I have about 3-3/8" from my water pump (70-up) to my 22" Cold Case Rad. Doesn't leave a lot of room for an electric fan(s) and the fan is just one part of the system, you need ample power and the ability to control it. I've beat the subject up myself several times.

What radiator are you using, Blue? I'm considering going to a 26" Champion so I can have more cooling options like the Contour fans. What type of temp controller are you using to turn the fans on/off? I assume you have no cooling issues with that setup. Being in NorCal I would assume not. Being here in South Texas I need mucho cooling!!!

I agree. I just finished rewiring my car so have plenty of good wiring & power to run whatever I put together.

That's a VERY nice installation for another make's part.

Mopar Radiators

ECP radiators is what I use. I have a 26" in my Duster, fan shroud, with a Hayden fan clutch bolted to @RustyRatRod 's facorite OEM fan and I actually wonder if it's too good.

I looked at the dimensions of the ECP and it should also work well with the Contour fan.

You mean those staggered 5 blade MP fans? Yeah, they move some air. I wish I had room in Vixen. But she doesn't come close to running hot.

I have a KKS374 in my Duster now. I used to have a Champion 374 in there, they’re similar but not identical outer dimensions.

I have a Dakota Digital 2750 as a controller, I think the new version is a 2800. It allows you to program the fan on and off temperatures for both the high and low speeds on the fans, as well as run after shut down and a few other things. I’m still running the same one over a decade later, I’ve had no issues with the Dakota controller.

Uh, my 340 is almost 10:1, ported iron heads, probably over 400 hp. I’ve had no cooling issues, the high speed on the fans has only come on when I was stuck in traffic in 110° weather. We get plenty of heat in the Sacramento valley.

It was, my core started leaking after about 10 years and buying the new KKS was cheaper than having the Champion fixed.

Yeah it fits very well. The fit on the new KKS is just as good.

Yep. Thanks for the Pro Tip. It’s been working great. My radiator, combined with the 5-blade MP fan, and low profile Hayden 2947 fan clutch “for applications with less that 3” clearance”, is more than sufficient (space and cooling).

I recommend it in daily driver applications but for an e-fan you can’t go wrong with the Contour piece on a 26” radiator.

I've said for years those fans move the most air of any of the belt driven clutch fans, but get argued down on a regular basis. lol

The picture of your Contour fans shows they use 3 connectors. The Dorman fans I see for sale don't come with connectors. Do I need to get 3 connectors to make them work?

You could probably make it work without those connectors, but yes that would be easier.

There are two fan motor connectors, the third is the resistor that creates the high and low speeds. I believe that the connector for the resistor is the same layout as the fan motors.

The part number reference for the fan motor connectors is S827. There are cheaper versions I just used that brand because it’s carried more places and should work for the cross reference.

Full disclosure, I went and grabbed the whole fan harness out of a Ford Contour and then stripped it down to make the harness in the picture, I didn’t buy aftermarket connectors.

The Dorman fan I bought came with the resistor, but not the connectors.

Ok that clears it for me. I got the wiring diagram shown in another post. Thanks.

Yeah you could definitely just change the connection on the motors if you wanted, they’re just 2 post connectors but you probably want something water resistant and that can handle up to 30 amps
