Brainstormin' 440 vs 5.9 ...

-
I think he bored .040 over ?? If I was to "build" the 440, then I'd change pistons and do some things to make power. I really at this point just looking at trying to knock the ET with what I have. I have everything but the cam. I thought with the RV the whiplash cam might be the best choice?? But usually, whiplash/thumper cams are not my choice.
Is there still a camshaft in the 440? I wonder how much Oregon can get you out of a regrind on that?

yes, the factory cam is still in the engine with a new timing set. I've ran this engine briefly in the '79 magnum. Holds good oil pressure, sounds good. An Oregon regrind is a good choice. It's what's in the 5.9

It's all in black and white right here, nothing magical.
I know it takes very little to get some numbers from a 440. I'm wondering if a cam swap alone will push the ET past the 5.9's ET.

The over bore ain't gonna make much difference in power, it's more about what he got with low cr.

Even though 440 heads don't flow to high people seem to make a good amount more hp than sbm can stock VS stock, what cam would you run ? is porting an option ?

maybe some touch up with my dremel... lol
I don't know on the cam... Seems low compression engines like something like a whiplash

Skip the Whiplash and get something made for your combination. Or, since that is going to be expensive, do the regrind and plan to advance it.
In all fairness, this RV 440 is the exact perfect candidate that the whiplash was designed for....

Measure the thickness of the outer row of headbolt holes. Stock is supposed to be an inch . Cut .030, you should measure .970 + or -.
Thanks. I didn't know this. I'll try it next time I get down there.

Do you run slicks? Or sticky tires? A 440 needs them for low et's.

The low compression will cut into the possibilities. Maybe mill the heads and intake a bunch. Not sure what that costs.

yes, 29x9 slicks. Also have drag radials 275/60R/15

I get why no to the pistons, probably a 15-30 or so hp gain, lot of work and $$ just for that plus even with a big cam and low cr gonna at least make as much torque as a decent 360 if not more.

If only want to spend a total of $500 buy a bigger cam for the 5.9 and a porting template kit.
A 440 will require a different transmission, exhaust , mounts etc…
Unless you are maxed out for head flow and cam already you can pick up quite a bit .

I think what the comparison in my mind really is, is this. Will a low mileage RV 440 with 4bbl/mild cam beat a high, high mileage 360 mag with 4bbl/mild cam.
I get the "low compression", but I'm also looking at 80 more cubes and bigger valves. If it's a wash, then I don't want the extra weight and less room under the hood. Nor the WORK !!! LOL

post 2. I already have BB mounts, headers, transmission, etc. And yes, throwing a few dollars more at the 360 is a very good possibility
