Rob....what was the lowest you remember living in NY? -33 maybe? I spent 3 weeks in Watertown after that big ice storm in 1998. The HIGHEST temp while we were there was -15.
Whew! Good question. I really don’t have a definitive answer. Living on Ling Island had a funny effect on weather. If the island called for 6-8 inches of snow, north and west across the Long Island Sound waters you could easily expect an additional 4-6 inches easy. Temps were close though. We always thought the water had something to do with it.

Worst I remember working in was -20-25-ish area with steady 40 mph winds.
(It’s been a long while)
It snowed sideways all shift long. I remember this because I was helping fix a coupler in the rail yard. There were about 10 of us taking turns so just a little bit for a few minutes. It’s a bit of a PIA job that takes a while under nice conditions, maybe two hours, which was nearly 4+ hour nightmare.

But the job got done and the train rolled out!

At least I was properly dressed for that night. The coldest and worst night wasn’t as cold. Maybe 15/20 degrees? But I was in a rail yard on the edge ocean with some crazy winds and NOT prepared for it at all. The wind was traveling in the same direction as the rail cars were lined up creating a wind tunnel. It was awful. Couldn’t stop shivering. Extremely draining.

Serious question. Do houses that far south in the peninsula even have heaters?

Yes, most are part of the AC unit with electric heater/furnace elements in the plenum duct work.

220v window AC units are also available with a heat cycle if needed.

Orlando is at what they call the Freeze Line. Everything South of Orlando the water lines do not freeze. Everything North of Orlando is at risk of the exposed water pipes freezing.

I've only ever heard that Ocala is typically considered the freeze line.
