Would you buy a 72 Charger Rallye with no title, fender tag, or current registration? The 340 is also gone. I told the seller on Marketplace that I would buy it before I realized it had no fender tag. I am now having second thoughts. I really want a 71 RT or a 72 Rallye to work on. Thanks FABO for any advice.

A nightmare depending on the sate it is in.
If it had a rear license plate you could possibly get info from the DMV
Offer 1/2 of what he agreed to. It may end up a parts car.

Depends 100% on the rules in your state.

I could get a title for that car in California with a bill of sale and a DMV inspection, assuming that the VIN tag is present and I can match another number (VIN tag, door sticker, partial body VIN). And of course the VIN doesn’t pop up as stolen in the database anywhere. Which you would absolutely have to verify first unless you like gambling.

And even knowing that I could do that, before I even bothered having the VIN checked I’d want a pretty darn good story as to why none of those things were present. If it’s legit the seller should be able to file for a lost title, for example.

But in other states it may basically be impossible, or, such a colossal PITA that it isn’t worth it.

I am going to go to the local Tag and Title in the morning, here in Johnstown, PA. Will see what they have to say about it. The car is solid except for the lower quarters and would be fun to work on, but I am leaning towards running away.

Sounds like a good plan. Figure out what, if anything, you can do in PA to get a title and how to proceed. I know what I’d need to get a title here, but that won’t be the same process there.

Some states don’t even issue titles for classic cars, just registration.

The way it is in Georgia is, if a car has ever been registered without a title, you cannot ever get one again. Not in this state, or any other. There's lots of online BS saying you can do this or that to get a title, but it's all BS. In Georgia, there's nothing you can do if one's ever been registered without a title. Then it's bill of sale only. It's bill of sale only anyway if it's 63 and prior. Georgia will not even RENEW a title if it is that old. Bill of sale only. Ridiculous.

Depends, if it's cheap enough you can part it out for a decent profit then cut the shell up to scrap then sure.

Someone posted (not on here) that Montana is the new Vermont. They supposedly will even send you Lic plates. Just what I heard a guy talking about at work.

Georgia can say that all they like but if I show up with a car that’s got a good VIN tag and more than one matching number somewhere else on the body and a bill of sale they’ll print me a title here in California right on the spot. If it’s clear in the database the previous registration doesn’t mean a thing.

Have you done it recently? I have 20+ years ago & had no issues... Currently I know of three people who are having a hell of a time...Some DMV employees simply don't like old cars & if you have the misfortune of getting one of those... There is actually a fairly current Mopar 5150 video of a Boss 429 that the DMV is giving them grief... I think it's luck of the draw who you get at the DMV & once one of the PITA types gets involved you are screwed

The last time I dealt with all of that specifically was probably 10 years ago, but honestly I had worse situations than just not having a title. Try having a bill of sale and a title on record (that wasn't supposed to be there) with a different owner than the name on the bill of sale listed. Still got a title, just took longer with some leg work on my end outside the DMV.

The laws haven't changed since then. DMV is always a luck of the draw situation with a clerk, but there are people out there that are certified to do DMV inspections too. They can not like it all they want, but if you know the laws, stay calm, and keep filling out paperwork all it really takes is a couple of matching VIN's, a bill of sale, and nothing in the database saying it's stolen. Most of the clerks don't know **** about classics, so, if you know the law and know all the forms and have some patience and courtesy you can get a long way.

And again, the OP's process in a different state will be totally different. I can say with confidence that if the car in question wasn't stolen, I could get a title for it here. But there's always reasons why a car doesn't have a title, and that can make a BIG difference in the outcome. If it's legit, I wouldn't worry about it here. In PA? No clue. His plan to go to the office and figure out what he needs to get a title, if he can, is the right one.

I don't know the rules in other states, but here is what I would do. I would go to the DMV, which the OP said he would do, show them the VIN, and ask if I could get a title. Unless they said, "YES", I would absolutely not buy it. The DMV office will know. You might also be able to ask the Highway patrol to run the VIN to make sure it isn't stolen, or maybe the DMV can do it for you. Regardless, Unless the DMV has a specific process for you to get a title, run.

I went to the local Tag & Title this morning. There is no way to get a replacement title in PA. The seller in NY would have to get the title, then PA could transfer it to me.
I'm walking away. I committed to buying it so I hope there are no hard feelings.

If the car and seller both are in NY, he should be able to get a title unless he is too lazy to mess with it.

$2500 of doors and $1500 hood on that car.

What's the price?

I wonder if you could BOS a GA registration, then take out of state with the GA paperwork.

Most states, for instance, FL honor the GA paperwork and will issue a FL title.

Then take your FL title back to GA?

If you buy it and it becomes a parts car, I need to know. Just message me
