68 twin turbo dart project.

Jesus! What a car this is going to become! The car is so clean from the dipping process, and the cage it is beautiful. It is going to look/be absolutly bad ***. Are you using W-5 heads? I would like to know more about the engine combo you have in mind. I cant wait ot see it rolling under its own power.

Great project, nice cage and your workmanship is also good.I to like trial and error and building something from nothing.I,m in the middle of a minitub, spring reloc. and frame connectors.Nex will be a cage, but I,m only looking for high 10,s with a stroked 408,Eddy RPM heads all in a 66 Dart.Love the pics and keep us updated on your incredible build. Thanks for sharring!

"Only 10s"? That is a fast car man I would like to see some pics of your car as well. If it works as well as your Dart Sport I think the local competition is in trouble!

Those are w5s and i was going to use them but I think I will go back to my old combo of w2s. It made 1000hp with the w2s and I already have the tune up and all the parts already and I think it would be a good motor to work out the chassis. I have decided to build a 400 incher with the w5s for my 70 swinger.

Pics of my 66 Dart are in Early A bodies disscussion Forum under..Fianally the 66 Dart is here!..The car is coming up on it,s 1 year anniversary of my ownership LOL!Been a busy boy with 2 cars and work.Enjoy! http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=50402

Well, its been a few months since the last time i worked on it. I worked on it over the past few days. Here is the results.

Please excuse the welds, it turns out that you shouldnt sharpen the tungsten with the tool your cutting the tubing with! It transfers the tungsten to the steel.

Why not build log manifolds? and free up some room for larger down pipes? are you going to intercool it?

Logs are ugly and dont make big power like I want. I have plenty of room for the down pipes no matter what kind of header I use. I am going to intercool it. I used to have a large front mount air to air intercooler and it worked okay but I am trying to make as much as I can from my combo. Here is the pic of one of two Spearco intercoolers that I will be using. They came off my buddies 7 second Camaro with 30 pounds of boost and 40 degree intake temps so I think they should work fine. I am going to cut off the tanks and merge the two intercoolers together.

nice build man. that is so cool lol:) the intercoolers are cool to i dont think i have seen any with out fins but hey they sound like they work gr8 lol. cant wait to see this beast run

My understanding was that the only noticeable power gains over a log manifold were with equal length runners, but more power was gained with getting the exhaust out quicker, as not to heat soak everything under the hood.

What liquid do you plan on using to for your intercooler?

The motor doesnt really care about the headers, but it does care about abrupt tees in the exhaust, like the way a log would be. Air speed is the critical component when dealing with the hot side of the turbo, anything will build boost after a while but if there is a severe restriction the engine wont be able to move enough air to turn a turbo that is loaded by the boost pressure on the compressor wheel. Too small of a down pipe will also create this problem as well as a restrictive log manifold. In my limited experience in turbo charging I found that what works on a naturally aspirated engine will work on a turbo motor. Within reason.

I run ice water in my intercooler system. Some people use antifreeze for its anticorrosion properties. I dont run anything but water in my cars that I run at the drag strip just incase of a leak. Coolant makes a greasy mess that is hard to clean up and if it leaks on a pass it will get on the tires and probably ruin any chances of saving the car. Water seems less slippery when its on the tires.

Beautiful work.

I cannot believe the number of members that drag race their cars..that sport has just about died around here. I'm impressed.

Ian.

So where are you dumping at?

from the looks of the one turbo you'll be sucking air through the headlights?

Originally I was just going to let it get air from the wheel well. But after much consideration I realized that I didnt have any room for my 4 inch exhaust or an air filter. I have since moved them down low just forward of the k-frame and below the radiator. I did have to move the radiator up about 4 inches. I am now considering putting two holes on either side of the front lic. plate to get fresh air.

Ian,
I love to race but unfortunately I dont have much time for it in recent history. i plan to race more this next year.

Okay I had a chance to work on it today after a thorough cleaning of the shop. I just finished doing some work to my 74 Duster and now I kicked it out and now I can focus on more important items. First up relocating the turbos.

So the first thing I did was drill out the spot welds for the lower radiator support and remove it. Then I bent up a piece of 1 5/8 chromemoly tubing and hang it in place of the lower radiator support. Then its just a matter of a couple of tabs and then bolting up the turbos. At first I tried to put the turbo under the fender to keep clutter to a minimum. Well there isnt enough room for exhaust and generally I just didnt like it. So I am having a custom radiator made and installing it in front of the radiator support and raising it 5 inches. The weird thing is the radiator I used to run will actually be smaller, as far as surface area, than my new one. This way the turbos will get some fresh air from under the bumper and it just works out better. Tomorrow I will finish connecting the headers to the turbos. Hopefully.

dude this is looking amazing:) i had an idea for you tro think about. cut out fog light holes in the bumper and put the turbo inlet thru there. so they are kinda camoflauged lol idk how sleeper you want this tho lol
