$5,800 to repair this scratch.....luckily I have insurance with 0 deduct.

So do I continue to drive it or do I trailer it to shows.....I'm worried now that this or something worse could happen again and then the insurance companies will drop me or make it tough for me to afford insurance.

Anyone have a large bottle?

Good grief ! It could get a little scratch like that sitting in a museum. Thats what touch up paint is for.
Would you insure anyone who filed that sort of claim ?

The first on many.

The insurance company would be the last thing on my mind.

I can remember while I had the windshield guy installing the trim clips in my front windshield.
He was drilling the screw holes, and while drilling the very first hole, his drill bit snapped, the drill jammed into the paint and made a spiral scratch in a U-shape instanly as the broken bit spun into the paint.

I was watching the guy from over his shoulder and I could feel the embarassment, frustration, and fear that overcasme him instantly because i was right there to witness it.

He turned around and looked me like "Oh crap, I'm a ded man."

I just started laughing, and said "**** happens man, it's just a freaking car."

I actually felt bad for him because it could have happened to anyone so I just let it slide as the first of many.

Now don't get me wrong, if some idiot side swiped my car or scuffed the hell out of it, I would probably be pretty whizzed off, but when you drive them, you take the same risk as you do with your daily beater.

It gets easier as time goes on that's why my goal for the car was to look great, yet not be a top notch show winner.

I can see if your paint is severely custom with no touch up available and you goal is to have a pristine 100 point show winner, then you have a valid concern but there are paint guys that can hook you up without repainting the whole car over a small scratch.

It's not the paint and no way I can or would touch it up....its to perfect to do so and its a three stage process. Silver base, opaque blue metallic mid and clear on top. I have it at the best shop around as far as I'm concerned so they are doing it the right way...not the tight way.

The issue is with having to remove all the panels and doors to get it back to as slick as it was.....let me tell you unless you have seen this paint job in person there is no way for you to understand the level of finish.

Tape lines is why they have to take it all apart again....doors, bumpers, hood, trunk lid, chrome trim, rubber etc....this car is slick all over and I will not settle for less. Also they will have to cut and buff again and we cannot take a chance on cutting through the clear that is left...do that and it needs a total repaint.

I do want to drive more but I may have to rethink how, when and where.

I have other rods to drive so this is not a huge deal for me to keep it clean and be more selective when and where I drive it.

And yes...it is almost a 100 point car so don't you think I should try to preserve that? The insurance people understand that so they are not being uncool about this at all.

One thing is for sure....I beat it up bad just going down the driveway!

Even if the car was a trailer queen these things can happen. I would live with it myself and enjoy driving the car.
I was going to do a full restore on my Dart when I got it. I stepped back and said forget that I want to drive the car and beat on it not feeling bad when RUBBER is cemented to the rear lower quarters! BUT I still will not drive it in the Rain or when the ground is wet at all.

You could start a NEW project for the $5800.00, that would get you a rolling chassis with a good base to start from! JMO

Nahum 2;4 read it. You're fighting a loosing battle. Sell the car or store it on the moon. LOL

I guess that's the downside of custom paint jobs huh?

Would be nice if they saved some for touch up.

I would not pay $5,800 to repair that. touch it up best you can and sell the trailer.

Put it in a plastic bubble and take the $5800 and buy a car you can enjoy. Thats a extremely extremely beautiful car and your not really complaining about the cost so I would drive it very very little and show it. Then get you a "Beater" that you can go out and knock around and hotrod. I mean no offense just a possible solution.

This is why I will never have a 100pt show car. If you like to enjoy YOUR car as it sits in the garage and looks pretty thats up to you. But if you like to do burn outs go to the track and put 10K miles a year on it touch up. Its your car do with it what you think is right. If $5800 is what it take to fix it the correct way then fix it. Its your car. I was putting the first piece of trim on my 65 right after paint and slipped. Yea I was pissed but I can do the car again when Im ready.

I really do feel for you, I spent a lot on bodywork and paint (just a regular base/clear) and the shop accidently caused a couple of nicks. I just sucked it up because I knew eventually it would happen. The problem I see for you is that more than likely going to go through this again. Does it make sense to stay on the same course?

I am actually in shock, I dont mean to be disrespectful but I have never heard of anything like this, does this happen alot a full repaint over a little nick, I guess that is why my insurance costs so damn much, I put a pretty decent dent in my srt4 a couple years ago and didnt claim it cuz it was not worth the hassle or increase in insurance! I loved the car and it was prestine before the bump but i figured hey its life screw it.

I know how that goes, I sideswiped a pillar in my apt parking spot and just stripped paint off the side of my truck. Many cars aren't mint green color any more. I live with it though, I'll fix it later once the cuda is street ready. I feel now it gives my truck character.

First of all, the scratch is on an edge, not in the middle of a panel. Anyone that knows how to touch up correctly can make it look like it was never there. If you pay $5800 to fix that, you are the definition of the word ANAL - lol. Also, if you hit the insurance company up for that kind of money for every scratch you get, you'll be losing coverage, or paying much higher premiums the next time around. Proper paint touchup is an art. I once watched a guy do some touchup on chips in the middle of a hood. When he was done, there was no way you could tell. Take it to somebody that is expert at touchup, (make sure they show you samples), pay a couple hundred bucks, and then forget about it. I highly doubt it will affect your point score.

I agree.
I have a local body shop that has done plenty of scratch, color match jobs on custom paint show cars and when they were done, you could not tell.
I'm talking pearl paint custom cars as well.
I know alot of guys want to just repaint the car, but I guess it comes down to finding a shop that is confident and skilled enough to color match and do spot touch ups with proper blending that looks perfect when finished.

I say look for a shop that is confident they can do it without painting the whole car.

No way its getting a touch up...won't work or fly with me.

Having a near 100-point show car does not suck...it's awesome.

I love to drive it and as you can see from my driveway I am not afraid to put it in harms way.

Small nicks or rock chips would not bother me as they would be lower on the body and more easily touched up (no so noticeable)...this is painfully noticeable..especially in the light.

I can tell that some of you have not had a paint job this nice and that some have based on the input.....for those that have not, I can see where you are coming from. For those that do, you can understand what I am saying.

I have never turned in a claim on any of my cars or trucks and I have had many issues (hail, hit n run, job site dents, etc..) that deserved to have a claim filed so I don't feel bad about claiming this and sorry if your insurance goes up because of it but after 30 years of paying in it's my turn.....I think I have earned it.

I guess that I will be more careful when and where I drive it.....I will take my Rat and my Bee out more often this year and save the cuda for the big shows and my early morning drives in the country.

Sad thing is that this damage occurred in my basement....a friggin door closed on it as I was pulling it in:angry7:

Duh-Oh

Also..they are not repainting the whole car...just the area where the scratch is....they are re-clearing the whole car as they will have to cut and buff again and do not want to risk burning through.

This shop is above the board all the way. I know these people and they are straight as an arrow.

That being said I will pass this info to them and see what there response is.

Trust me...I was as shocked at you and thought/said to them many of the same things you have mentioned....They had an answer (legit) for all my concerns.

So it is what it is...Thanks for your input...much appreciated
