Who told you 904's uave 2.77 1st?
904's and 727's have 2.45 low.
904's had an option of 2.77 but it is a 998.
Mopar speed secrets suggest 2.77 but when the books were written 4" stroke smallblocks didn't exist.
2.44 is more than plenty gear.

The higher level has the pushrod moved as well as the intake valve. The intake side is pretty good. I don't remember the exhaust port being raised like the W2, not sure.

I think as with any head cam profile comes into play. And just like any serious builder many cams are tested. All of a sudden one outshines the others.
BPE heads are not W7 or better. But, for a ported casting pretty good. Extra money for intake and rockers is necessary for his relocated...
I turned a 378 8,500 every pass with 360 mains and full groove mains. On 360's I use hv pump. The ps oil galley was tubed and ds blocked at #1 main. #2 and #4 cam journals grooved to oil constant. Then a 66 holley jet in deck. Harlond sharp rockers.
