Do I need a solid lifter?

You could pull one of your hydraulic lifters apart and shim it solid for your checks

    CAM HELP NEEDED!

Pretty sure Howards grinds the cams for Hughes engines. If you have a search around on the Howards cams website they have a pdf with all their lobe profiles listed on it, there are some interesting lobes there. Doesn't cost that much more to pick what you want and have them grind you a cam. I...

    920 heads - What Cam?

I used a comp XE250H in a similar setup - mid 70s 318 with ported closed chamber truck heads (very similar to the 920 castings) edelbrock performer manifold with 625cfm carter AFB, headers and 2.92 gears. Good power bump from stock but nothing crazy, it was a pretty good setup for a low buck...

Engine Quest Dodge Magnum Heads New Zealand castings.

Toowoomba products - these will be very early production heads cast in Australia (first couple of runs) not sure if there were changes made to the castings when they moved production to NZ.

Making power out of the 318

Yeah makes perfect sense...... instead of replacing the pistons in your 318 just buy a 360 and replace the pistons :BangHead:

Making power out of the 318

A 400hp 318 is definately doable, but not for 3 grand. Not sure what machine shop rates are like in the US but over here you would spend most of your budget just on machining and balancing. I will go against the grain here and say a 15/16 year old in car built in the 70s with a 400hp motor is a...

    XE285HL in 360

Yes, but they are advertised timing numbers not timing at .050" lift. (37° to TDC + 180° to BDC + 69° after BDC = 286° ) there would only be a few degrees between .006" lift and fully closed. Someone here may have a cam card with the .050" timing numbers. But it will close the valve well before...

New Comp Cams coated DHL lifters

Hmmm... $1900 for a set of comp FT lifters - I would just go for a roller cam

    XE285HL in 360

Yeah the .050" timing plus 15 degrees isn't that accurate - depending on the lobe profile you could be way off. (Old school easy on the valvetrain grinds vs agressive lobes designed for a .904" lifter). The timing on the summit description are at .006" lift and probably closer than the 84°...

    Steering Box Ratio

Kirby-Bishop made variable ratio steering boxes & racks for Fords & Holden's in Australia and later for Mercedes and a few others aswell. I have one of their variable ratio power steering boxes to go in my valiant - 2.5 turns lock to lock, 17.5 - 11.5 ratio. I couldn't find much info on them but...

    Cometic gaskets

I've used the blue hylomar spray with success in the past if the surface finish is a bit rough. But as TT5.9mag said if your surface finish is RA50 or finer install them dry.

Good idea to have a baffled oil pan?

^^This. I would put a baffle in - cheap insurance and easy to do while the engines out. There are a few mobs here in Australia that make laser cut baffles for the stock pans, surely they would be available in the USA too?

    Hypothetical 318 Builds

I would be stoked if it hits 400hp, wasnt particulary trying for a number just a good strong motor. I agree there's a few more HP to be had with a bigger carb - I wanted to try out an AVS2 as many people rave about them, after much deliberation i opted for the 650 over the 800cfm. I wouldn't...

    318 cam

I'm no expert either but I would think the comp with the shorter advertised duration & narrower LSA would yield better cylinder pressure / dynamic compression all else being equal. Assuming both use the same lift point for advertised duration.

    Hypothetical 318 Builds

Here's one I built last year but haven't gotten to getting it in the car & running yet (car stuff has gone on hold due to having a baby). 73 318 block bored .060" over, factory cast crank ground 20/20, reconditioned factory rods fitted with ARP bolts & setup for floating pins, KB167s 0.013"...
