I found the problem. The last time I reconnected the wires to the ignition switch, I connected them incorrectly. Switch the connection on one wire and it started right up. Thanks for your reply and advice.
ground wire to the battery is good, i have the part pictured in the comments, but am waiting on a new ignition switch so i can install them at the same time. so not yet.
