I am in need of a new air cleaner for my 318 in the '64 Barracuda cause the current one is really old. I was looking at the K&N style ones, but not sure if they are worth the extra cost. Also, should I spend the extra $ and get the matching breathable top? Do those really help compared to the standard chrome top? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Don't laugh but you can use a spectre filter from autozone. It is the same as a k/n at half the price. You wash them the same way and they breathe just as good. I got a cold air kit for my 04 chevy truck and i have one on my 340 duster. They come in all shapes and sizes and also a complete kit. Just my thought hope it helps you out.

Someone said the breathable top is thought to distort the air-flow to the carb so that you actually get more restriction, or maybe the carb doesn't operate as well. You might research. I have no opinion.

Duster do you still have a standard air cleaner top on it or a breathable one?

There is also a filter called a Kool Blue filter. Similar to a K&N. The pics I've seen look like they might not have as many pleats as the K&N though. They're available on eBay. I saw a 6 pack element for about $35 delivered.

Can't imagine why you want to suck a bunch of sand and dirt into your engine in exchange for no performance benefit at all. See here to cut through the BS and hype; K&N "filters" (and all the other brands of the same type of "filter") are a scam.

(And until you remove the throttle plates from your carburetor, the air filter will not be the bottleneck in the system)

Once again from slantsixdan.
An eye opener fore sure.

On my '70 Dart GT I am gonna make some kind of Ram Air hookup from the Drivers Side Scoop to Air Cleaner.
And run the Passenger Side Scoop to the Air Box/Cowl so I can close off the infernal leaf/pine needle/whatever junk sucker on the top.

Thanks for the link!

Decided to just go with a replacement Wix air filter for now. Gotta try to keep on a budget. Need to sell more of my Dad's diecast collection to pay for the restoration of his '64 Barracuda! :)

That was definitly worth reading,...Been running a K&N in the jeep for years along with a series of 1" holes in the bottom of the air box, sounds cool when accelerating but always wondered if it was worth the $44 bucks,...thinking back I never saw any dust/residue in any of my other vehicles intakes when I replaced the standerd Fram's...
