If you have read my last threads or not, my rod bearings have taken a dump on me. What I wanted to know is how many of you would be fine with running the same oil pump and screen again? The pump and screen have less than 800 miles on them. And if you suggest keeping...should I just clean them well or what? Also I am not against replacing just wondering what others believe I should do.

well i would take apart the pump and look for knicks and divits and whatnot from metal being forced thru it... also spin it by hand? if it grabs or hits a tight spot then i would say no go..

the pick up can be cleaned...

I will just get new ones, as I said I have no problem getting new ones. Do you guys know if theres anyways to tell of my piston rings are bad with them out of the motor?

I already have all the gaskets. And I cant get bearings until the crank gets looked at. Im just asking about the rings. The look fine and compression was good. Im just asking is there a way to check if they were not sealing properly with the engine out.

You could take the oil pump completely apart, clean, and inspect it. A small piece of debris in its relief valve can cause serious headaches. That can happen with a brand new pump too though.
As for the rings, Other than scars in the cylinder walls, I dont know what else to look at.

Ok, well the cylinders looked good and cranking compression numbers were good at 180.

i agree with the others about taking the pump completly apart and checking it. use a ball hone with running water to flush and clean in the cylinders and reuse the rings.

53 years old and I never knew you could reuse rings. Learn something new everyday.

Never heard of reuseing rings once they were pulled out of a motor. I have several used oil pumps in a bucket. Need one? Junk to me.

The rings are still on the pistons, just not in the motor

Just my opinion... Toss the pickup because you can't clean in thoroughly enough.
Rings: if you have a spreader and can take them out without them twisting at all, then I'd say reuse them. Also IMO, you cannot properly clean those parts without taking it all apart. If you do decide to replace the rings, I would not use a general use hone. Either have them properly re-honed or use some green scotchbrite over the square stones on a flex hone and very lightly de-glaze the bores. I've had great results replacing rings and doing that. Remeber the bores have to be ultra-smooth for moly rings. Not hand hone or stone can keep them that smooth. the scotchbrite just cleans the crap out of the existing hone marks, similar to a plateau honing brush.

If the rings are still on the pistons and the bores aren't re honed, explain where taking them out and then putting back in their respective cylinders is gonna fail?

And a used oil pump from a new motor that has only about few hundred to a thousand miles on it 'like new' unless metal/sht went through is just fine to re use.

Im sticking the same oil pump back into my refreshed 410, because it's still in spec...and the same used pistons....and drive...and timing chain....

if the stuff is good...it's good.

The piston rings were not removed from the pistons. They are still on the pistons. All I did was remove the pistons with the rings still on them so I can take the motor to be hot tanked and get new cam bearings installed. The piston rings were not removed off of the pistons, they are still on their correct piston.

I'd clean everything and if it's good reuse it. Some of you guys are so anal you'd crap your pants if you knew what I've used over before. lol

yea, I'd get a new pickup for sure because they can be a ***** to clean. you can reuse the pump. they are easy to take apart and clean. :)

If your not against changing them then do so, you'll sleep better at night.

ya I will change the oil pump and pick up and timing chain. Piston rings I prolly wont since nothing seemed wrong with them and the motor is not being honed again.
