Oil change help

-
One would have to do it at least half way back on the filter to avoid the stem on the engine.
I have been there on the destroyed filter housing.

One of the best solutions to that I have found so far is to palm smack the filter side to side before attempting to remove it.

I would not stick the screwdriver through the filter. It will make a mess for one. Plus, I have tried it several times only to be stuck with a filter still stuck on and just torn slam the hell up. Not to mention the screwdriver can damage the oil filter tube on the engine. And all of this is on the side of the engine that's not real easy to get to. I would wait and get a filter wrench.

Like an ex girl friend once told me. Lubrication is key!!! Put some WD40 or even a little oil around the filter and let it sit for a while. But the proper tool for the job should get it off.

Never really had any luck sticking a screw driver through a filter....always ripped the filter
apart then had a real SOB getting it off. Wait for a GOOD filter wrench or large pair of channel locks to grip it.

You guy's are getting played!!!!!!!

maybe.........but there was a time when I didnt even know what a gasket was.

If you cant afford a filter wrench or space is too small to use one, stab a big screw driver through the filter and turn it that way. It will create a mess but if the job needs done, it needs done.

If its a small block with headers have fun getting the filter out, has to come out the top.

I had a similar problem with my filter. I couldnt get that thing off at all.
Finally I went over to Sears and bought a oil filter claw wrench. Best decision ever imo. That claw wrench is awesome! Just need a ratchet, extensions, and a socket(I think 1/2).
Good luck!

Pound a big screwdriver all the way through filter and unscrew it.
Works every time.:D but a bit messier.

I've had to do this screwdrive trick or very large channel locks. I've done many an oil change when I was in automotive. My Dad (the Dealership Manager) used to say, "Oil Filters & Oil Drain Plugs don't hold the engine together". Keep in mind a good trick when installing the filter is put some clean motor oil on the "O" ring, spin on until it seats and than tighten by hand. I have never had one loosten off or leak.

The drain plug has a tourque but, the same rule applies...snug, it's not holding the engine in the car. Always, always check or replace the oil drain plug gasket. Check the gasket seating surface on the oil pan & under the head of the oil drain plug.

Spend the money on a good metal band type oil filter wrench with a swivel handle. I've had little or no luck with the type that "cup" over the bottom of the filter. Especialy if King Kong put the filter on last.

Last resort...cutting tourch...just kidding :coffee2:

Cheers
