So,
What kinda top speeds we seeing with these swaps?

I am gonna be putting a stock (for now) 5.7 2005 hemi outta a ram into my 73' dart. Prob gonna stick it with the 727 for now (till i can locate/afford a t56)

Any idea on speeds we are seeing and I can expect?

thanks

My Magnum RT topped out @ 131 MPH. All stock.
Of course, the areo is alot better than an A-body.

thats not shabby. Bet its lower speed cuz im an A body and I live in colorado springs (higher then a mile..take that Denver)

But a Magnum R/T weighs in at about #4200 where most A-bodies are around #3200. That's like adding 100+ HP

ya...hehe.
I read that you can actually TUNE the hemi 5.7 up to damn near 500hp, since I am getting the computer flashed anyway....think i'll investigate getting to that number.

500hp hemi ina 73 dart, cut offs, at least 3" exhaust, t56 tranny crusing in the mountains...GEEZUS

I've got an old 833 behind mine, so no overdrive, but with my 3:55 rear gears and a 25.6" tall tire I can pull her right up to redline without much trouble. My speedo ends at 120, but I was probably doing at least 6k rpm if not 6200 (the redline I set), so that puts it somewhere around 130-135. There's another gentleman here that lives in Germany and drives his hemi swap on the Autobahn with no troubles.

If its a bone stock 5.7 motor, 500 isn't going to happen. Throw a cam, some ported heads and intake, and long tube headers and you might see 500 flywheel.

I would think the lack of areo & an O/D trans will reduce the top speed somewhat.

If you have a GPS it will tell you how fast you are going.

Tune a 5.7 to 500hp?????????? send me what your smoking!!!!!!!!

Swifter, are you saying that 500hp from a 5.7 isn't possible? Please clarify cause I know that stroker 5.7 n/a can and will make 500hp easy, or are you talking about bone stock?

Without overdrive your top speed will likely be gearing limited. The charger cop cars will run 150+ I would expect a much lighter A Body should be able to reach at least that with an overdrive.

Here's a fun tool to give you some idea depending on tire size and rear end ratio.

Here's another one that will give you a graph of speed in each gear.

Here's a tool that gives you top speed in each gear.

Charger cop cars 150 t ? I have gone 140mph in my 07 Charger RT/rt. It runs 20 inch wheels It had more in it but started running out of road. Someday I would like to stick one in an a body.

Top Gear had a new Challenger up to 170, at Bonneville. They did duct tape the body seams and remove the mirrors though.

I can't think of his name but there's a guy on here with a 6.1L carbed hemi in an A-Body that claims 140 MPH. He lives in Germany and cruises the Autobahn, so I think he's legit. Of course he gives the speed in KPH, but I can do basic math so I converted it.

I feel pretty confident that a stock 5.7L Hemi with a decent tune and headers (400-425HP) would be good for 130 MPH maybe 140. Aerodynamically speaking anything north of 150 is a whole different world. I am pretty certain that my butt would begin to pucker at 130.

Since Gen II hemi and Big Block Darts often run 150 in the quarter, I know these cars are capable of speeds north of 150, would I feel confortable doing a banzai run at 160 in a 40 year-old Dart? In a word, no.

Joe Dokes

That is a scary thought. Coarse by time I'm able to go that fast, it's gonna be framed, new rear and front suspension. I'd trust the car.

My Dart has 5.7 and a O/d trans and runs 2000rpm at 70 mph. Is it capable of 150mph? probably... will I ever find out.....probably not.

The aero issue IS very valid. My car gets to 120 very quickly but feels like it starts to hit a wall at 130. I'm not gear limited, 168mph at 6200rpm in 5th, but I'm probably gonna need another 100hp to break 150 by much.

A heads cam 5.7 might make 340-380 to the tires depending on what dyno. You aren't getting even 500 flywheel out of one. Keep in mind the truck motors you guys are using typically put down 240-260 to the tires stock.

Charger cop cars 150 t ?

Here's the Michigan state police test from 2006.

According to their testing the 5.7 hemi Charger topped out at 150 and the Magnum at 134. They have annual reports on their website with tests of a variety of vehicles.
According to the latest tests 152 is the top speed for the newer chargers.

:happy1: very interesting topic. The member here from Germany I believe his name is Bucshi340. Forgive me if I spelled his name wrong. I think he is running a carbed 6.1 with a 5 speed from a Toyota pupra (Supra). I don't remember what he had for rear gears.

Aj

I've had a stock '07 Charger Daytona 5.7 topped out at 140. I'm pretty sure that's where the electronic limiter is. Felt like it had more to go...

Top speed is more about aerodynamics than weight. The heavier car just takes longer to get there but all else being the same the top speed would be very close, if not the same.

The Top Gear Challenger had a hard time getting to 160 without taping up the nose, the CTS-V broke 170 and the Vette did 184, IIRC.

The new charger's computer limits to 156mph and mine has a 160 mph speedo and if you have a DIABLO SPORT PREDATOR it can remove the limiter which is why the cop cars go that fast. They come from the factory with no limit and ability to turn of the ESP(electronic stability program). But as far as just the engine in an A body the truck was rated at 340-345 hp at the crank but the newest chargers are around 370 hpn with the VVT.The computer is what really gives the 5.7 the best possible hp if you run anything else on a stock engine it will be at best 300 hp to the wheel but probably lower.the tranny has alot to do with the hp also(5 speed auto).Over on chargerforums you can find several that hit the limiter but that is very fast. The fastest I went in mine was 120 but it was a short stretch. In short it will go as fast as you are and the car are willing to go.

there ya go- I expect with my mods, my Stealth would bury the 290 kph speedo. And no, there's no chance in hell I would try it.

As far as top end of an a-body with a 5.7, can't really answer that until gear ratio is added- there's a big difference between 2.xx gearing and 4.56:D
