good carpet cleaning products?

Hey Guys, im going to be dying my carpet from green to black with some dupli colour vinyl spray paint and was just wondering what i should use to clean my carpet before i do the colour change....What will thoroughly clean the carpet so that the paint will stick?
 
I know some of you guys have changed the colours of your carpets on here with dyes, so please share what you used to prep the carpet....i would reall appreciate it

I have never dyed any carpet befor, but I use BlueMagic carpet & stain remover to clean my carpet. This stuff will get almost everything out including tar, old set in stains ect. ect. It should clean up your rug real nice. Been using it for 10yrs. now. You can get it at any wal-mart or your local auto store in the cleaning section. It requires a little scrubbing & drying time, but its really good stuff. Looks like this:

Ive used that duplicolor stuff on carpet it wears off easy and makes the carpet hard and brittle. In all honesty you would be better off buying new carpet
 
Yeah, at $120-140 you can't beat just going with new carpet. By the time you would buy all the stuff to clean it and all the stuff to dye it, you would likely have spent half that already.
 
I've patched and dyed small areas like heel holes for the used car lot. Temporary repair at best.
Fabric softener will take away some of the steel wool feel after dying.
Carpet color change requires a lot of dye ! More than you want to dispence from spray bombs.
 
I used a liquid carpet dye which I sprayed on in a puimp bottle. Woprkde well, didnt clump up or make brittle.... lasting power isnt great but the rug is soft....
 
Im thinking of maybe just buying a black carpet from Wal Mart with no jute instead and just cutting and trimming it to fit, and buying a roll of insulation from home depot (my dad bought a roll for 25 at home depot and it makes a world of differnece inside the car- heatwise and noisewise)....i really dont want to drop $140 on a brand new carpet so i think i mite go this route....has anyone else done something like this before?
 
Just be sure that you buy the "soft fuzzy" rubber backed black....very thin rubber backing, and the black is a cut pile like fuzz...best way to describe it....Looks like cut pile auto carpet, but wears nicely if you don't get it wet and gravelly all the time........

It molds fairly well around humps and the like........You can do a pretty good job.........Just be sure to take ALL the seats out....don't cob it.....and leave PLENTY around your edges as you lay it in............trim it after you've laid it out properly.........You have to press it in firmly, make sure you have enough to tuck under the sill plates, etc.

All in all, Not bad stuff. 8)

I went that route with a Brat I had, it worked ok at best, I'll tell you, the stuff they sell at walmart is at most 3 feet wide, so you'll need atleast three rolls and you'll have to deal with one or two exposed seams.

I honestly wasn't happy with the stuff, but my Brat was a beater with a few holes in the floor, I only did it to keep some of the water, dust and heat out. At any rate you're going to end up spending half of what it would cost to do it right and have it last the first time.
 
WalMart doesn't have what I'm talking about.........go to Lowe's or Home Depot for it........it comes on a roll like the other carpets.........not a WalMart special.........
 
Yeah, the walmart stuff is on a roll, I think it's something like 11X3, it has a plastic backing, I used that for the trunk of my '63 Dart Convertible and it turned out well, though I don't think I'd use that anywhere that would potentially get wet (i.e. floorboards)

I think what Tom is talking about is the same stuff I used for my Brat, it's actually made for use in bathrooms, has a really flexible white rubber backing, it's a lot like a bathmat but the carpet it's self is way softer, you can get it in bigger sizes than the walmart stuff, mine came in a sip up plastic bag like bed spreads and sheets often do.

It'll work, I just wasn't much of a fan of it.

What are the plans for your Scamp? Driver? Strip only car? Show car?
 
its going to be a driver with a black interior, and rite now my budget isnt really leaning towards a new premolded carpet, so i think i may go the home depot route....just wondering though now that you mentioned it, will this carpet you guys are talking about withstand water? and will it stay in place even though it isn't premolded?
 
believe it or not, I sprayed my faded black carpet with "plastic" rattle can spray paint from Home Depot... and it worked! Doesnt last forever but man it looked brand new and didnt clump at all....
 
I install carpet and clean carpet for a living that's why I am poor lol.What you want is an enzyme cleaner very good at removing dirt,greases oils, and food stains.If you can find some mix it in a separate bottle spray on and let sit for 5 minutes and use a soft brush to brush it in.The trick is to rinse it out you do not want any cleaner left or you risk the chance of your die not sticking.So in your cleaning machine use very hot water to rinse it out.
 
I went to a carpet store and bought enough automotive carpet to do my floor for 60 bucks.

If you have more time than money:

Pull your carpet. Remove the pad off the back. Mix up some really hot water and half a bottle of dish washing liquid in a 5 gallon bucket full with a lid.

Take the stuff to car wash. Then pour/ brush on with a broom. Apply it all. Preferably let it soak for a while. I usually let it soak for 3+ hours. Then lay carpet flat or preferably hang off the wall and just wash it with pressure soap then rinse until water coming out is clean. Will take about 20 minutes of car wash pressure action. Work from the top to bottom or one side, to other.

Let it sit in the sun on something that suspends it off the ground letting air under it for 3 days. Or inside with fans blowing on it for 3 days with air under it.

Get a bottle of 95% alcohol at walmart or where ever and pour it all over with a rag or brush. Let that dry.

Then use what ever dye you choose.

Vacuum your car while carpet is out.

Get heavy carpet pad from lowes. Use that under carpet.

Get a couple auto floor mats from walmart so shoes dont wear off your dye.

I have had outstanding results with many carpets that were physically sound but very dirty and matted.

The key is: remove padding, soak judiciously with detergent, pressure wash until no trace of dirt or detergent is present, dry aggressively and thoroughly to prevent mildew or bacteria.

You will have a virgin carpet that will accept dye or color very well.
 
I have died my carpet before i used a good vacuum and resolve foaming carpet cleaner.

For the real dirty areas dawn soap water scrub brush and make sure its clean and dry.
 
Buy actual carpet dye, and dye the carpet outside the car. Once the carpet is out of the car have a local carpet company come clean it with their truck. They can probably also do the dye for you.
