Replacing gas tank in my '65 Dart...

-
I've decided to get a new tank. Think next weekend I'll drive to Lakewood and see what Layson's actually has "in stock" and go from there.

I wouldn't put that gas (varnish) in my mower! That stuff really has a pungent aroma that just wants to stick around. Going to drop it off at the county hazardous waste dump.

New tank grommets are ~$15. Consider a sender w/ a 3/8" outlet and a return stub if you ever think of running EFI ($45 on ebay). Good too even w/ a carb to return gas to avoid vapor lock. I see gas tanks for ~$120 on ebay. Make sure you buy "fuel injection" hose, not the cheaper "carburetor hose". That later often doesn't stand up to the ethanol in gas today (read posts).

Ditto on Bill's suggestion of a new tank grommet! When I bought my 69 it had a new tank but they reused the old grommet. It leaked and was a pain until I got around to replacing it. You've got a 47 year old car, replace what you can while the tank is out!

I should of posted a picture of the old tank grommet. It's falling apart. A new one will be purchased. Great tip on the fuel hose!

Man! I just threw my tank away that was in good shape I would have gave to you. I used liquid chem tool a long time ago to get the crap out of my tank then pressure washed the crap out of it. It looks pretty rough so I would definitely replace it if you can

Appreciate the thought but no worries!

Got the sending unit out, what's left of it. Yummy! Amazing fuel was flowing to the pump at all. And no wonder I was getting different readings from the gas gauge. Now I do realize that the gas gauge could be the problem but a new sending unit certainly won't hurt!

That sending unit looks like it was in a jungle!! Holy jeez.....very good point bout the upgrade on the rubber hose. Go ahead I dare ya run it in the mower, or make moonshine outta it!

Looks nasty. I had stalactites of rust in my tank. I wish I had taken pictures. tmm

Actually that sender unit looks to me like it might still be good under all the crud. I know a new one is in order but just for laughs you might clean it up and test it to see if it works better, would be handy to keep around as a spare.

I went to Layson's on Sept. 29 and picked up what was in stock. The rest was back ordered. Received some things in the mail about 10 days later. Got the rest of the parts I ordered last week end Nov. 3rd. So all in all 35 days total from my first trip to the store to receiving everything in the mail. Not sure how that stacks up with anyone else's experience but I'm reasonably satisfied.

I have the sending unit on the new tank plus the filler-neck grommet in place. Am waiting for the sun to warms things up outside and will probably put the tank in later today. Kinda cold out right now at 10:45 am PST. Was 25 degrees at 7:00 am. Up to 40 last time I checked.
