Hey guys tried the search but I am having trouble finding a clear answer.

I am sure I will figure this out on my own when I tear into this car but I have a quick question.

I am wanting to delete the AC compressor on my 318, was curious if you can just remove the compressor and use a different belt, or do I need to run a bracket and pulley in place of the compressor to keep the belt aligned.

Hope that made sense.

Thanks! _kev

you'll need to pick up a crank & water pump pulley from a non AC car & space out the alternator appropriately. I picked up everything I needed from memebers here & bought the non AC length belts.

I took a look at my 72 with the 318 and used a straight edge to determine if it aligns without using a pully and bracket....it looks like you can bypass the compressor and not even remove it.....clearance for the belt is close but looks good..if you remove it completely there shouldnt be any problem.....I suggest that you use a straight edge to determine if the pulleys align on yours too. or that you may need to space out the alternator

Stilliniraq is right...
On my '72 one day the compressor clutch just decided to come loose and basically fall apart (yes, I later reassembled it).
At the time, I just picked up a non-AC belt and bypassed the compressor.

YUP The a/c compumper reqired a matched pair of belts. Alternator alone needs only 1 shorter belt.
