Headliner Nightmare

-
I hate saying this but you get what you pay for, my headliner cost me 350 back in 1991. The guy who done yours has to repair it and he can do it if you use the correct words...

Thanks Younggun, Unfortunatly my Dart isnt mobile. Looks like We are neighbors. ;)
Nor do i have the funds to do this again, But good to know of a place incase i need one in the future :)

Yea that thought has been haunting me for a while now Hotlines ;)
I had everything that i needed just needed him to install.
He was hurting for money. as he contacted me like 3 months after i originally called him. >.<
I think I scared him off when i mentioned the possability if having to fix the sail boards Lol

There's the problem. Never have anyone hurting for money do anything as it always turns into a quagmire.. I learned that years ago..

Very wise words right there.. and i am learning it now. unfortunalty -_-
Lol
Never too old to learn

...Told me to put my lil heater ni the car for a couple hours a day for two weeks, and if it didnt fix it, he would come back and poss re stretch it and or use heat gun. 5 weeks after the initial 2 weeks of heating it hes MIA,
No communications back to me. Wich tells me he has wiped his hands clean and wont be coming back. Sad as he raved on how he always backs up his work....

I'd be more concerned about the spot at this point. That ain't stretching out. Did he supply the material? Unless there is some way that that is the fault of you or the car, he needs to fix it. Otherwise, I would be looking for a refund and start over with someone else.
Does he make a living doing this? If he has a decent reputation he'll want to get it to a point that you are satisfied. I'd stay on him till he makes it right. I definitely would not give up without talking to him. Maybe a good reason he has not been responding (or not)
Make some noise! How did you get the guy in the first place? If word of mouth - it travels both ways -start talking and he will get the message.

Ok, my screen wasn't showing the last few posts... Maybe that approach won't work if he ain't making money from doing this...
Sucks if you were trying to help him by giving work and he stiffs you. If you think he can help you get it right, I'd still stay on him to try and get it fixed.

I actualy supplied the headliner and insulation, he just came and installed it,So maybe its a bad part, i dont know for sure.I found him on Craigslist, and first cotacted him to get a price, then about 3 moths later he actualy wrote me again sking if i was still looking and so i had him do it.
He doesnt have an official business, but i thin its what he does. for work.
No business cards, i dont know where he lives other than in my area.
I am going to keep trying to get ahold of him, his last email responce was right b4 the motherday weekend tellin me he had a big job and was really busy. >.> The communication has been very bad. He knows i need it finished, he has for over 5 weeks now. so its not looking good,
If in the end he doesnt come fix it i will be all over CL warning ppl of him and his fail to communicate and not finish his work. Thats for sure.
Thankks for the input :)

Yea i mean i figured he was on the up and up, he was gung ho when it came to coming and doing it and getting his money. Seems now i am taking second or third base now that he has to come back for free,
I am going to keep trying to find him, thanks again :)

Sorry to say this but those sags are not coming out w/heat. I would try and remove the glued areas at the windlace and sail panels and try and stretch it to smooth things out. At the windlace, once stretched and reglued, use spring clips or those black large clips that hold papers together to keep things taught while the glue sets up. Loosen the glue at the base of the sail panles and try and stretch it in place.

I did my headliner myself and came out real nice. Here is a tip, I used a 500 watt halogen lamp pointed uwpward at the healiner and got it nice n toasty. Once warmed, I was able to stretch it in place. Over time, the warm sun will take out some small wrinkles but it won't work on those you have.

Sorry to say this but the guy really butchered yours up. Headliners are cheap. You could have done it yourself, ruined 2 of them, installed the 3rd one, and still be ahead of the game.

There are a lot of posts on line to do DIY.

That's shoddy work right there. I honestly doubt the guy has any idea what he was doing. Sorry you got taken. Best of luck in getting it fixed or done better.

I think that can be stretched out and tightened up without replacing the headliner. You might need to get a pro to come look at it and maybe he wont beat you up to bad to pull it tight and finish it up.

I went and re-looked at your pictures, I think he could have made that headliner work with putting proper tension and heat. Do you know if he used the two tension rods for the back side of the hedliner? Do you have your original sail panels? You can make new ones even if your originals are beat up. I had to on my Valiant. I would save up buy the new material and re-do it. If you can get a friend to help an extra set of hands always helps.

Regardless of whether the pieces of board really "do anything" or not, I would get my money back. 275 dollars is a lot of money in these hard times for somebody to do a messed up job on your car. Sorry that happened.

Yea, i am going to give it a little more time trying to get ahold of the guy who did this, And i agree, for the cots of the headliner, i could have scewed up a few times for the money i paid him, >.< If not, i will be taking all the wonderful advice i have recieved on here and go for it.
Thanks for the advice :)

It does look like if i could get that one sail are stretched, the rest might comeout with heat. And may have to go find someone who with a good rep come and give me a price to fix it.
Thanks Rocky:)

Larry,
I am not sure how he did the jobs, never saw any other kind of tools, he used to bows i had and my materials, I do have the cardboard sails, he just never out em in, he covered em like they were supposed to go on the outside of healiner. wich ive learned is wrong for this car so if i have to open that area up i will put the boardsin where they belong
Thanks for the advice :)

Yea would be nice, but i dont see him givng me my money back, seeing as hes not even replying to me request to come finish the job.
Your right tho, $275 is alot of money for me to just toss.
But im learning from this experience. I wont use anyone that isnt part of a legit business, the warranty has to be everything.
Thanks Rusty :)

Thank you so much FABO, you folks are truely awsome in your sharing and helping out in my time of need. Your all keeping me from yanking my hair outta my head in total stress. lol You all are the BEST :)

Alan, I was thinking did you try calling the guy that did your headliner from a different phone number, maybe he will p/u. It might work then at least you can vent to him. Even if you don't get anything else out of him you can give him a piece of your mind.Good Luck bud and keep your chin up.

Lmao, funny that you meantioned that. i have infact thought about that
And will indeed try that. untill i hear that his phone is no longer in service, I will become a thorn in his side if needed.
Great minds think alike
Thanks :D

Heat will not take out some of those wrinkles.I would pull the edges loose a little at a time pull it tight and re-glue it.Small wrinkles spray will water and go over the area with a blow dryer. On a hot day spray the wrinkle area with water and leave the windows up.

If he has to advertise on CL for business then call you up wanting to do work then that's not a good sign.. A guy that can do this stuff well will have plenty of work to do by word of mouth alone.. I would burn his phone up all day long.. Good luck and hope it works out in the end..
