I have a '75 dodge dart /6 and was wondering what kind of oil is best for it...some people have said straight 30w (which is currently in it now) and others say 10w30 or 15w40......thanks for the help, I need to do an oil change here soon, I know it's been a while.

And here we go again. Basically whichever you like the best.

Basically what 1970 duster said , preference .I myself buy whatever is on sale at the time or buy it when it goes on sale , i do not think one is any better, i usually buy either castrol or pennzoil , and never had a problem with change .

Brand of oil is a matter of preference. The viscosity should be the first consideration. Multi-viscosity will help fuel mileage and circulates faster upon start-up. So a 10w-30 or 15w-40 should be used instead of a straight weight.

Since you have flat tappets, it couldn't hurt to lean towards oils advertising extra zinc - for older cars. Some say that the newer oils are "ok" for older cars. Probably some of the same people that say that 10% alcohol in our gas is "ok" too. BS, or at least lean on the "safer" side.

Personally I prefer Amsoil and have seen the benefits and extra "insurance" it provides. But it's up to you to determine what brand is most feasible to use.

I wouldn't run straight 30 wt oil, even in LV. You will have easier starting w/ 10W30 or 10W40. You can use 20W50 in LV and might be better if your engine burns significant oil <1000 mi/qt. There is also "high mileage" oil, which is probably just thicker.

Definitely don't use the cheap 30 wt non-detergent oil you see in Dollar stores. The detergent suspends the black carbon so it doesn't wear the metal. The main difference in diesel oils (CJ rating) is more detergent, and many people use that in gas engines.

any oil is better than no oil lol I use shell rotella just because I buy it in quanity for my fishing boat and write it off.

It's a slant six. It'll live on 90 weight.

10w-30 in any brand.
The key is to change it and the filter often.
If it doesn't leak or use oil, i would use synthetic 10w-30.

Probably more important is using a quality oil filter - one with a anti drain back valve. Wix 51515 is my choice. 10w-30 with regular changes and slanty will stay happy. A ZDDP additive is also good insurance against lifter failure. Avoid synthetic unless it is driven all the time.

Street Car for me it's Castrol 30W up to 70,000 Miles Then I go to Castrol 40W till the rebuild.... Works for me
