Looked at comp cams, Lucas, and Royal Purple all are 30w. Any suggestions and if so any reason why.

I used the Comp Cams break in oil cause I have a flat tappet cam, this is not such a big deal if you have a roller cam. I used the 10w-30 brake in oil from Comp I do believe,

Brad Penn. Just bought 12qts 30wt break in oil and 12qts 10w30 at a machine shop I came asross for $140

BRAD PENN BREAK IN OIL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then use the standard oil afterwards. Its formulated for our old school engines with mech. flat tappet cams and has all the zinc and phosphorous built in.

We use Joe Gibbbs for break in. Sometimes add a bottle of comp additive with a flat tappet just to say we did in case something goes bad. After that we use the Valvoline VR1 like what sammie said. Its got ZDDP in it so I don't add anything else to it.

Joe Gibbs for break in than JG HR-1 afterwards, solid flat tappet stick.like moe7404 stated whats it worth?

Showing my old school fool self here. Years ago, a new car came with break-in oil. Then they quit the practice, now we're back at it. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Recommend a lightweight mineral oil, say a 5w-20 or even a 10w-30 will do. Use the ZDDP additive. Do not leave in for more than 100 hrs of operation. The oil is still slick, but it has a bunch of crud in suspension that the filter is not getting. Switch to normal lube with ZDDP added for the first change. Use ZDDP afterwards as desired at oil changes.

I do not recommend a synthetic oil for break in. The stuff is slicker than snot on a doorknob and will not allow the rings to set properly. After the break-in period, feel free to use it.

DO use http://zddplus.com/ to get the zinc the oil needs. i have a case coming. 24 bottles $189. just a little less than $8. ea. what is your engine worth?
Hey Moe Read this http://540ratblog.wordpress.com/

"I’ve also tested ZDDPlus zinc additive in 3 low zinc oils, and I’ve tested Edelbrock Zinc additive in 3 different low zinc oils. In each case, the recommended amount of additive was used. And in all 6 cases, these high zinc additives ruined the oils and made them WORSE than they were before the extra zinc was added, by SIGNIFICANTLY reducing their wear protection capabilities. These additives did the opposite of what was promised. That is not surprising, because most major Oil Companies say to never add anything to their oils, because doing that will ruin the oil by upsetting the carefully balanced additive package that their Chemical Engineers designed into them. And that is precisely what was seen when using these high zinc additives"

Not saying this guy doesn't know his stuff, but when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. The author never identifies himself. He sounds a bit like David Vizard. Would David Vizard be an unbiased source? You tell me.

Thanks for all the responses. It's a 1971 360 with a Lunati flat tappet cam. I will buy some Joe Gibbs break in oil then was planning on VR-1 after the break in. Thanks for the info. Hopefully I will break it in this month.

One last question. After the break in are you guys draining the break in oil right afterwards or running it for a short time after break in (100 miles)?

I use Joe Gibbs 30 wgt in all my motors for break in, change oil after break in.

I've used the comp cams oil additive and the lucas additive. Now with oil changes I use half a bottle of the lucas added to walmart oil. Works great for me in the 350 and the 318.

WOW.... That is expensive. A local engine shop sells Brad Penn for $6.50 a qt. Just bought 6 qts of the 30 wt break in oil for $39 + tax. Bought 6 qts of Brad Penn 10w40 for same price, for after break in.

I bought a total of 24 qts of Brad Penn for $140.00. Thats an average of $5.85 per qt. It's just math !! LOL

TO: 67Baccaruda. thank you for your post. i have heard that TO much ZDDP is not good like you said. i only have one engine on the street. i wish i could know what is happening in my engine. i am leaning to the ideas you talked about. the old racers saying if a little is good i need a whole lot, truly is out dated. as iam 65 and would like to get my 2001 dak V6 to last the rest of my life.
