Could anyone tell me if this is a suregrip unit for a 8.25 rear? Supposed to be out of a Dakota and 27 spline which is what I would need, Don't know how to tell if this is a suregrip.

Definitely a sure grip but what ratio is it for? Theres two different ones. One for highway type gears and then another for lower gears like you'd see in a street car. Such as 3.55's. I think 2.71 and higher ratios used a different sure grip. Im no expert in Mopar differentials though so maybe one of the residential forum gurus can chime in on the different sure grips.

Does anyone know if this suregrip unit will accept lower gear ratios like say a 3.55 or 3.91 etc..? I found out that a 2.45 gear ratio is different and will not accept those gear ratios. All I know is that it came out of a Dakota with a 8.25 rear and 27 spline axles. I would be putting it in a 84 Dodge Truck. Thanks

I will have to ask the guy. I can also get a 9.25 rear out of a 89 half ton truck that has a 3.55 suregrip. The guy said it would be a direct swap. But I have never done anything like that before.

Most of the Dana 35's had them. Pretty common on 95 up jeep Cherokees, I just did rear disk brakes on my 8.25 from one of them and kind of wish I bought the whole rear.

Look around on craigslist and you can get them pretty cheap.

It's a sure grip alright.
Here is a pic of two (2) different housings. Both are 8.25's. The one on the left is for the 2.56 gears and up (i beleive). The one on the right is a 2.45. If you look at the two, you'll see the ring gear mounting flange on the left is higher than the one right. They both came out of A Body cars.
Just figured i would share the info.

Thanks everyone! Sorry for all the questions, I just don't really know anything about these rears. Wish it had a 8 3/4! I wonder if it would be cheaper and easier to just put the 9 1/4 rear in there? Its complete. I can get it for $200. That suregrip is $125 and I don't know if that is for the lower gears like 3.55's. I could tell in that last picture though the difference but cant tell by looking at the one I would be buying. The only experience I have with the rearends is with 8 3/4's so I would probably have this done. Thanks

If your current rear end is an 8.25 & you swap to the 9.25 only thing you may halfta do is shorten the drive shaft some to fit correctly. Or if the doner for the 9.25 is same wheel base & same drive train just bigger rear diff grab its drive shaft too & presto! cook both tires & once! If that's out of a Dakota it would be a real early Dakota. Most Dakota SG diffs ive seen have been the TRACK LOC cheap clutch style unit. That's a cone style SG Nice unit & re work able if ya know what yer doen.

So I would just basically unbolt the rear end remove brakes lines, driveshaft, leaf springs etc... And put the other one in there? I should be able to do that. Just have never done that before. You guys are very helpful!

It appears that it will fit for the numerically higher gear sets. The ring gear flange is pretty thick. It is thick so that the ring gear is moved over to make contact with the smaller pinion gears of the lower ratio gear sets. That what it appears to be, but since this is only the internet, it's still a guess.

RRR that is what it is, I bought one at a garage sale and after looking into it could not use it.

This is the part number that's on that 8.25 unit 18 05 038 903. If I can get that 9.25 rear I am just going that route. But if not I will just get this and hopefully it will work for the lower gears.

What does it run to have a 8.25 rear set up at a shop? I called 2 local places and they quoted me $800+ with me supplying the suregrip and gears. I am looking for whole rears with a suregrip but have found nothing. The 9.25 rear I was looking at would not work. Thanks

800+ and "you" supply the sure grip and new gears?
Do you have your own axles and new bearing/overhaul kit?
My local shop quoted me 200.00 to put it all together and set the mesh of the ring & pinion, and I supply all the parts.
Maybe someone else can chime in, but I am not for sure about that price.
It's not hard to put it all together period. It just getting the bearings / races pressed on/in and setting the ring and pinion mesh ( i.e bearing adjustments) that I don't have the tools to perform.
I learned from "RRR"..LOL
He explained one time and that was that.
Like I said, I am sure there are more experienced people here than myself. But 800.00 is alot in my book, unless I am missing something.

I had a company locally tell me it was $300 to LOOK at my rear end.... I said for $300 u can't even look at mine.

Find a real mechanic who can check something for no cost...

I'm a computer guy and I only charge for things I FIX.... Anyone can look at it...

:wack:

I took an 8.25 out of a 72 D100 that blew out and put in a 9.25 out of a 83 Extended cab half ton (D150). The only thing I had to do was use one of those conversion U joints. Other than that it was a bolt in. Matter of fact I was in a bind cause I had to go to work the next morning. It was an all nighter and I know I didn't have to go to the parts store for anything. I had the conversion u-joint from my dads challenger.
