i ve got a 72 demon, 355s, hughes 3000 torque converter,318 with ported 302s, 284/484 cam, it stalls at 2900 and takes off fairly good, i think? cant get a 2nd opinion, i live in a small town, and im the only classic mopar in town! was wondering what would happen if i put in a different cam for more low end take off while keeping same torque converter? or should i be content with what i have. right now it squeals the tires for 15-20 feet, must admit i would like to smoke them for a good distance.strictly street cruiser, no drag strip.thanks:coffee2:

It looks like you have enough converter, your gears are good. Don't know about your compression, intake, carb or timing but I wouldn't go down on cam. With that converter and gear the only thing lacking for smokey burnouts is H.P. Could you give a little more info on motor?

Cheapest best and easiest option in my opinion.. Tug the 3.55:1 pumpkin and replace it with tire frying 4.10:1 or 3.9:1s I bet you smoke'em for 2 city blocks

If you install a smaller cam it will make more low end torque which will cause the converter to stall a little higher. Probably won't be a huge difference unless you go way down on the cam.

If you want to keep it streetable (3.91~4.10 gears are neat for power but terrible on the hwy) and want more torque without giving up any top end hp switch to an aggressively ground solid lifter cam. Doesn't have to be any bigger than what your running now, just aggressive lobes (meaning they pop open and closed real fast). Go with a tight lash cam and you won't even have to adjust it all that often. Usually once a year depending on how much you drive it. I'm running a Racer Brown ST-14 and love it. It'd work real good in your combo too

86 318, 302s bowl ported,1.60 exhaust valves, shaved 010 with o25 head gaskets,284/484 cam,ld340 matched to ports, holley 670,windage tray, lifter valley baffle tray,1 5/8 headers to flowmasters, mopar distributor with chrome box. i had 391s, but swapped to 355s, i should of just bought a taller tire, wasnt worth the expense. motor is in good shape, i just wish i could burn rubber without using foot brake!

That's a product of a smaller cube engine with a big cam. I bet it'll sing at high rpm though. A looser converter will get the engine in the power band as soon as you stomp on it so it'd increase the chances of burning the tires easier. If you go that route go with a good 9.5" converter from a leading converter company spec'd for your car. 3800-4000 stall will really wake it up and won't drive much different than your Hughes 3000 stall

I give the O.P. credit: At least the thread poster knew enough, to connotate the relationship of both . Very nice.

I had a very similar combo. To be honest I found a huge improvement switching to a solid lift cam. I went with a 270S Comp in my 318 '302 headed combo.

Which 484 cam 108 or 114 lsa, and where did you degree it in for installed centerline?
