hey guys what was the stock rear end size and gears in early a 4 speed.with a 273 v8

In 64-65, all you could get was a 7 1/4" rear, with gears up to 3:23, but you could get a sure grip in a 7 1/4"! In 66 the 8 3/4" was offered in an A body for the first time as an option, but the standard axle in all A bodies was still the 7 1/4"! In 67, when ordering a big block A body, the 8 3/4" was standard, all others had 7 1/4" standard with 8 3/4" as an option! In 68, 340 cars all got 8 3/4" as well as big block A bodies, all others came standard with a 7 1/4", or 8 3/4" optional! It stayed that way through 73 when the 8 1/4" was introduced and the 8 3/4 was phased out!

Just parted out a 66 Formula S 273 4 speed car, had a 7 1/4" 3:23 Suregrip!

You could get the 8 3/4 in an A Body in the late model year 65. I've parted out a really late built Dart GT- a 273/235 4 speed car. It had a build date of 7/23 (I saved the fender tag). The rear end date was early July 65. It was an interesting GT - besides the motor, transmission and rear end, the only other options on it was a radio and factory Air!

Cool Thanks for the great info! which gear ratio would be best for mileage? the best for street mileage and best for Highway Mileage?

Stock rear gear ratio was from 2.93 to 3.23. For Mileage and highway cruising you could go to the 293's but it would also cost you some acceleration.

According to my 65 Dodge data book, 3.23 were stock with a V8 4 speed with 2.93s, 3.55s or 2.76s optional

I have had mine apart 6 times now installed a new ring and pinion and now I can't get the noise out of it. Pinion is set perfect, after 35mph it gets louder and louder on the drive side. Marking ink shows them coming together nicely go figure ! any advice anyone ?

Maybe you have a bad bearing.

It's been too many years, so I don't remember where I got it. My "stock eliminator" 65 Valiant had a 3.91 SG 7 1/4 rear.
Direct Connection, back in the early years, also listed 4.56, 4.88, 5.13 gears for the 7 1/4. It is possible also a 4.11 but can't verify that.
