The Dodge Western News Bureau introduces 'The Red Weenie'

Jack McFarland the Chief of Dodge {Western Region} introduces a
performance 1964 Dodge Dart GT.

The car, is a 'sporty' red 1964 Dodge Dart GT 'convertible' with Bucket Seats
and a Push-Button Torque-Flite Automatic.

The engine, is a 273/180 HP {base engine}, that has been converted with
High Performance Goodies', to put out a surprising 240 Horsepower.

The Dart GT will include a Stewart-Warner Tachometer that is mounted
below the Radio and under the dashboard.

The High-Performance Goodies include;

* Racer Brown ST-1 Camshaft and Lifters ............................................ $124.00
* Aluminum-Finned Valve Covers ......................................................... $38.00
* 3.55 Gears w/Sure-Grip Differential ................................................... $89.00

It is a 'performance car', but not necessarily a Drag Race car. It is designed to
be a compromise between an adequate Low-End and an ample Top-End.

It is designed for Freeway Driving at 55 to 70 MPH. We aim for a 65 MPH range,
and can maintain a 13.1 MPG in Fuel.

Wow, I wonder if they hit there mark on the 243hp. but interesting car.

No Details on the >

* Exhaust

I'm guessing they had left the stock Exhaust Manifolds and Primary 'Y-Pipe' on,
but possibly installed a 'hollowed-out' low back-pressure Muffler unit for the
Exhaust System.

Exhaust upgrade??? Hard to believe it used the stock 180 HP single exhaust pipes and put out 240 HP ???

The 65-67 273 Commando/Charger needed pistons, 10.5:1 plus cam/4 bbl and exhaust to get 235 HP

Really doubt "hollowed-out' low back-pressure Muffler" alone would do it...

Yea I'm thinking they missed there mark by a little bit! Especially with the stock manifolds, the single exhaust and the lower compression motor.

I'd like to see what HP levels they did make though.

But as usual '69 Cuda 440', I like the interesting stuff you bring up.

'The Red Weenie'

It was stated that the 273/180 HP {with 'goodies'} put out 240 Horsepower.

Now that was with > 9.0-1 Compression, and a single-pipe Exhaust System.

'Goodies'
* Racer Brown Camshaft & Kit
* Offenhauser Aluminum Dual-Plane Intake Manifold
* Carter AFB #3447 {600 CFM}

What page was the article on? I'd like to have a copy of that.

The 273/ 235 HP was already being produced with release in mid-Sept 1964 (1965 Models). Press models (pre-production) were out in July 1964.

The Red Wennie would have been a slightly different take- 3:55 vs 3:23, aluminum dual plain vs factory cast iron. Both running Premium (almost hints 10.5 pistons). Target seems to be similar to the Barracuda, but they didn't target the suspension. Rally, Sport, Formula S for the suspension.

So the 273/ 240 Dart GT would have been similarly classed with the 273/235 Barracuda at the strip?

Actually No >

* 1964 Dodge Dart GT 'Convertible' ..... #2950 lbs. ~ 240 HP = 12.29 Wt/HP

* 1964 Barracuda .............................. #2940 lbs. ~ 235 HP = 12.51 Wt/HP

'The Red Weenie' with the 273/240 HP would have been classed in E/SA in 1964.

Note; The 'Red Weenie' was marketed as an Automatic Only car.

The Barracuda 273/235 HP 'Commando' would have been classed in F/S or F/SA in 1964.
