I plan to hit it with a sanding disc and reuse it. I am sure after only 240K miles it will be fine...
 
Carbon? Only if the heat had turned it into a diamond.....LOL Maybe you will be rich if you could make that happen with detonation! No distinct shape.... maybe a piece of casting flash or an edge of a guide casting.
 
Polish it and go with it.
There is alot of meat on the top, I would use a red scotch brite on a roloc disk and just knock the burrs off.
 
I will check the heads to see if there is any pieces of the valves missing. I just pulled the heads off and set them aside as I didn't have plans to re-use them. I didn't notice the damage until I cleaned off the tops of the pistons.
 
Looks more to me like spark plug. Magnums detonate like mad when the intakess start sucking oil and people drive for years on them that way. Some of those look like center electrode marks and it got blown out the exh valve.

Have you never seen what carbon can do? Christ, I've seen many motors like this with chunks of carbon bouncing around.

I grew up in a Machine Shop....And never saw anything like this related to carbon.....That **** gets blown out.....
