I've never seen this, or noticed it,this is the main harness

then it plugs into this adapter

then into the Dizzy

I could plug the dizzy right into the main harness, they reach, but the wires would be reversed. Is this a factory thing or something the PO did or who cares drive the car.

Braided is engine ground the extension goes to the dizzy.

Extension cord :D
Never seen one before either though, and now you find you have two places for the distributor signal to fail.
I hate those connectors (can't trust em)

After a fashion, this IS SHOWN in the factory service manual. You can download one free from MyMopar. The 73 manual, as well as a couple of others were provided due to the hard work of several members on THIS board

Page 8-167 or thereabouts shows the connectors, CE36 and CE38. The diagram, as such, page 8-154. These can be more difficult to follow as they are not laid out like the old style diagrams

In the wire diagam (top) CE36 is one end of the adapter, which hooks to the distributor. The other end of that adaptor is one of the two in the diagram CE38. The other half of that is in CE38, hooked to the "main" harness

I don't know.........maybe the factory effed up and manufactured a whole crapload of harnesses that were incorrect, then added that little jumper to reverse them. "It would have made sense" LOL if they were simply an extension, that they would maintain polarity.

Here's an interesting tidbit for ya. I've never figured this out .....from my Motorola / E911 days (installing 911 radio telco gear) a typical wall to instrument cable for a phone (RJ11 cable) also reverses polarity from one end to 'th other.

Take a look........the center pair, red and green, are reversed from one connector to 't other

Maybe pishta knows, he's a phone guy.............

Here's another old story from back then.........This is the "main" operating position of amateur radio K6NCG, the school club station at Treasure Island, a bit different when I was there We bought the Drake transmitter before I left, the receiver came after. The National amplifier (NCL-2000) was there, as was the collins wattmeter/ phone patch in the center. This was probably taken about 71 or so, I was down at NAS Miramar then.

I along with others put the "big rotator" up which is why the big rotator controller is sitting at top right

NOTICE the dial phone with the headset plug (dual jacks) "Back then" you didn't just go hook up your own extensions, you had to have the phone company do it. The phone patch plugged into the dual jacks on the phone

One time, someone made an unauthorized toll call or five on that phone, so when we came in for the next club meeting there WAS A LOCK in the no1 hole in the dial. Like this:

I REALLY busted everybody's bubble when I spoke up and announced "that isn't gonna stop anybody!!!" and promptly showed the club officers how you just punch the buttons ten times and like magic.....and operator answers!!!

I love this site.....got some laughs and good info...thank you all!

Certainly interesting how they reversed the connectors. I bet you're right about the factory effing up and "adding" the extension after. And that lock...WTH - never seen one of those!!!!

That's a great picture of the radio setup. I sure wish I would have taken more when I was first started out in the Air Force. I worked primarily Air Traffic Control radio, but also worked on the KWM-2A and some SATCOM and SLFCS (although they wouldn't allow pics of those!!). Now...this was in the mid 80's...

Wow, KWM-2A's in the eighties? I thought our stuff was obsolete, LOL.

I'll probably solder the adapter into the main harness and eliminate that extra connection.

I've bought those at NAPA before. They are a trailer light part of some type.

I used it once when the engine harness was from a slant 6 and the connector was too far from the distributor.

Doesn't look like your issue, and I don't know about the wires being reversed, though.
