I am picking up an 05 5.7 this Saturday with 120,000 miles on it. My plan is to ring it, put new bearings in it and put a cam in it. I would like to get as close to 500hp as possible. Whats it take to get there? I will be adding TTI's headers as well and make up my own cold air intake. I will be using the stock intake and running it all with an aftermarket ECU.

Lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ lol couldn't resist

Cam-only 5.7's in the eagle configuration are 460-480 hp machines.

on a pre-09, W/o a bump in compression, or a complete rotating assembly, you're going to have your work cut out hitting 500 with a stock rotating assembly.

Weird I spent $2000 for my 6.1L Hemi and it comes with 500HP factory. You keep your old tech.

Riddler

Here's a Riddle for the Riddler ;)

Below are two Statements. One is factual, on is false... you must repost the correct one.

1. Riddler is a hell of a fabricator and has alot of knowledge to offer someone considering a 3G swap.
or
2. 6.1 hemi's had 500 HP from the factory...

Let me know which one of those is correct lol

OK, well how close can I get?

Engine masters just did an 03 with ported heads, cam, and throttle body with a stock bottom end (not rebuilt) and made 475 or 485, I cant remember the exact number.

Victor heads and a howards 711133-08 cam. Top it with a 950HP. Exhausted through TTI's.

That would be my shot at it if it were mine.

I'd talk to IQ52 about the heads though

Well thats kind of your answer right there. Without getting overly exotic (aka-expensive) If engine builders took a early 5.7, and ported the heads, cammed it, and put an aftermarket TB on it...and got 480 ish. What else do you think you're going to do to it to beat that? What do you think it costs to port a set of heads?

The factory 6.1 made 420.
the eagle makes 370-390 pending tuning/intake. and makes 480 ish with a cam/springs.
the 6.4 makes 480-490.

I think you'd be super lucky to match engine builders. Unless as stated you get into a stroker rotating assembly, or at least a point of compression via pistons, but at that point you're flirting with race gas. That 500 HP mark is a real dividing line between Happy on the street, and happier at the strip. In my opinion. This is why alot of guys go forced induction...but thats another animal entirely.

I was looking at a 2014 5.7 truck motor but was scared away by the vvt and mds and all the other things I know nothing about. Can you disable the vvt or mds mechanicly on the 09 and ups? I thought you could with different lifters and cam but then got lost in all the information I was reading.

thats how we do it on our crate engines. Holley HP/Dominator software, a special locked timing set, and a cam swap.

In all honesty it takes a little bit to make 500 out of an early 5.7. You cant do it without CNC eagle heads and a cam. You wont be able to do it with early heads though. Youll need eagle or 6.1 intake as well

If you're already planning on an aftermarket ECU, why not just put a turbo on the stock 5.7 and be done with it? Then you've got room to grow if you ever build a good motor.

Well the plan was to get it going n/a then save up for the turbo stuff later. Boost and cast rotating assembly scares me but I know people are doing it. What will they handle? 7lbs?

They will be fine at 6 psi with a good tune. They have cheap pistons and shallow ring lands

Shoot, didn't even realize you're local to me! I think we've talked before, I've got the turbo Wagoneer and Cherokee.

For what it's worth, my Cherokee has a 09+ with the vvt locked out and stock bottom end on 6 psi. 11.46 @ 120 weighing in at 3995 lbs stick shifted.

I didn't know that was you, I'm friends with Andy, he's going to help me try and get this together. He said he should call you and see what you did lol.

I'm just trying to get something going somewhat on the cheap right now. I've been building this car for 7 years now. A few weeks ago I was going to sell everything off and be done. Now I've sold off most of my big block stuff because I just couldn't afford to finish it and it was too radical for a street car for what I want to do. Seems most of this new gen stuff is pretty reasonable. I'll probably just go with the 05 for now and get as much as I can out of it and then slowly build an eagle headed motor while I enjoy this. I'd like to get in the low 11's with this motor, car should be about 2800lbs hopefully, th400 and an 8.8 rear end with a spool.

500 HP with a simple bolt on.......
ProCharged 5.7, this kit is for sale, less tuning.

You and Andy can stop over here sometime and we'll talk about it. I've got a spare torn down in the garage we can look at.

Will stock manifolds work in an a body in a turbo configuration? If not is there any aftermarket ones that do our maybe an srt manifold or something?

Just toss a nitrous kit on it. 150 shot will get you there easily and its affordable. Source a used wet kit from something and change what you need for your car. I picked up a used kit off of a Mustang for $300, a used progressive controller, and had it dyno tuned to make sure it doesnt go boom. For less than $1000, I went from 380rwhp to 520 rwhp and 625rwtq w/ my '09 5.7 VVT.
