I bought an A833 overdrive transmission earlier this summer, and I'm just now getting around to inspecting it tonight. I bought it for $250 from a guy who said he rebuilt it in '95 and then stored it inside until I bought it in July. The input shaft was covered in grease to protect it, and he said he filled it up with fluid to protect the internals from rusting. The transmission itself is an a body 1976 unit that most likely lived it's whole life behind a slant 6 (it came with a /6 bellhousing). I don't know what to expect, everyone's version of "rebuild" is always slightly different. Is there anything in particular I should keep my eye out for? Tolerances, etc. I've never been inside one of these transmissions before. I'll also post pictures as I go along. Thanks!

Main thing to check on these particular 4 speed's is wear and slop in the input shaft bearing area in the main case. These tend to wear in that area and get sloppy. Brewers performance has a hardened ring to fix this problem. I would just get a rebuild kit from Brewers, and replace all the bearings and seals, also check all the brass, and gears for wear. The are how to articles above on doing this stuff, check them out also.

Most expensive wear item and people don't fix in "rebuilt kits" is the gear engaging teeth (dog teeth). They should have some point to them.

Same goes for the engaging teeth on the syncro rings. But those are much less expensive to replace and come with a true rebuild kit.

Alright, thanks! I'm hoping it's in good shape, I will post pictures (maybe in another thread) as I go.
