Hey Guys and Gals. I was set to buy the scare bird conversion for my 9" drums, and I happened to email them to see if the kit would work with my Cragar SS wheels. I received a simple reply of "NOPE".
Now because the back side of the wheel (hub flange) is flat all the way out to the rim, I am wondering why they wont fit. I think the "rim" part of the wheel will not interfere either. I am just curious if anybody is running this set up? I really wanna' do this.
If its not a possiblity then Ill have to get either Rally wheels, which do not fit my build, or spend a Grand on new wheels before I can even get disc brakes! Not Cool. It seems the onlt wheels that DO fit the conversion is rally wheels. Or some 17's or larger.

Im hoping someone has some input on this! I was thinking about maybe spacers because I have the room for the wheels to come outward a bit more too. But..............?

Contact Cass. www.doctordiff.com. He should have some solutions for you.

I wouldn't use a scarebird conversion for a 9" drum. Those knuckles are very weak. They are crazy thin up where they transition from the upper area where the ball joint connects to the part that goes down to the spindle.

Are you trying to keep a small bolt pattern? If so, I'd go to a 10" drum knuckle and use Stainless Steel Brakes disk conversion. I put one on a 68 Dart, and the small bolt pattern Cragar SS wheels fit fine.

If you'd like to switch to a large bolt pattern wheel, just swap over a 73-76 A Body disk setup. Parts are cheap, and wheel choice is unlimited.

realy there is no reason they shouldn't work. There was a guy on Moparts that did that swap on a 65 B'cuda and I believe he was using Cragar S/S's.

I did it on my '71 Scamp with stock 5.5x14" rims. I'm very happy with them
for the money.
But like it was said, go to the better spindle if you can.
also go to a junk yard and find the calipers you are going to need
so you have cores. I paid $10 for the ones from the JY, and saved
$20 in core charges.

I found his thread! I have PMed him to try to get some more input. I see he had to do a bit of grinding on the caliper to get the wheels to clear the caliper. I dont mind that considering it wasnt to a structural part of the caliper. Anyhow thx for the tip. We'll see what happens.

grind other places on your car, leave the brakes alone
also, those spindles are stronger than most magazines give them credit for

Well, someone from Scare bird got back to me last night saying they will have another kit out in a few weeks that should do what I want. We shall see I guess. I have to be honest though, the people at Scare Bird are a bit irritating with the short and un-informative answers they have been giving me. I have asked them specific questions and have been recieving simple replys like "nope" or "we'll have a new kit in a couple weeks". I have asked them 2-3 questions in my messagaes and recieve nearly no response. Kinda irritating.

Did you ever get the cragars to work with scarbird I'm trying to do same thing

I make it a habit of magnafluxing used spindles. Every 9” spindle I’ve mag’d has had cracks. Stay away from the 9”spindles.

A friend of mine bought this kit from scarebird for his 68 Dart. He had 9" drums and Cragar s/s wheels and everything fit fine. He is a member here also 68dartman. Buy the kit. Bobby

I got scarebirds on my 71 duster
Find me a set of cragars and well toss em on, see what happens

I give up. What is a scarebird conversion. Never hear that before.
A disc brake conversion for older mopars
They include a custom bracket which allows you to use off the shelf parts
I believe on my duster, they used Toyota calipers and Chevy rotors, so the purists don t like them...but they also wouldn't like it if I plowed into their tail end because my 9 inch drums don t stop on a dime
