Windage Tray question

Finally got back in the garage and looked at my pan... DAMN IT!!!

Looks like I'll go ahead and order up a different pan gasket.

JBC426, I appreciate you giving me the heads up about that issue.

I'm glad my experience can help a few guys avoid this little oversight. It was a pain to figure out what was going on with those flaps hiding the source of my oil leak. I put up with it for months on a fresh 408 build before I finally stumbled a crossed it.

Do yourself a favor and use either Superformance gaskets or Cometic gaskets. Cost a bit more, but worth the extra time waiting for shipping and a bit more money. I also use Permatex Ultra Seal massaged into the metal on all the surfaces with a healthy dap in the 4 corners. Make sure all the metal is super clean before massaging a thin film into it too.

Do you have the front section from a regular pan gasket set that's correct for your pan? If so carefully cut the front section out of the 1 piece gasket and use the front section from regular pan set. You'll have to silicone the corners and you'll have a 2 piece gasket in the end but it works fine as that's how I did mine. I had to remove it once and things peeled off nicely and I cleaned them up and reused them. I have also heard of guys using JB Weld to build up the low areas of the pan so a 1 piece gasket can be used as is.

Could this section not be build up using something like "The Right Stuff" even?

I've used that on all my intake mounting jobs, sometimes the bead gets to be a pretty good 1/2" high, never had a leak...and if not, what about cutting out the "blocks" from a new stock replacement seal and mounting them "underneath" the one-piece gasket?

I know it's a hack at best, but man...nifty one piece gasket and such a silly problem to get de-railed by!!!

Interesting, I'll take a look at this more closely. I didnt get into the garage this weekend to play around. Thanks for the idea.

Good to catch it now... it's kinda lucky that the dipstick DID hit the pan; I guess it was trying to tell you something LOL. And good for jbc426 to point it out.

Yep Mopar Karma on your side Ramie. Nice catch jcb!
This info should be made a sticky with part #'s info etc.

I haven't used "the right stuff" but I've heard good reports on it so it might work

The only problem with that is we're only talking about a 1/8" or so difference so pieces that thin might push out

I hear ya

I hear that! The devil is in the details. It's a subtle, but brutal oversight.

Fortunately, I was able to change the pan gasket with the motor in the car. I had to lift my motor up with my cherry picker, and it was not fun.
I have pulled the pan with engine in car to change oil pump. Never again. Had no lift.
