I agree, for me personally I'd rather have a normal shotgun vs a handgun in a home defense situation. I've got a Mossberg 500 w/18 inch barrel and a pistol grip next to my bed with OO buck shot. I think it'll do the trick :D

I have one too. You might change ur mind on the load tho, if u pattern it in 15 feet or less , like inside ur house .
I use to keep mine loaded w/ no. 6 pheasant load, till I patterned it (by accident ) , now have a good heavy quail load/ 8`s , at 11-15 ft , it will surprise u how tite it still is. In a panic situation , I can see missing at "in house" distance with 00 !

That's a good idea. I need to patterns my 28 inch trap shooting barrel on my other shotgun so I'll bring this one along and test it out. Would be interesting to know the pattern.

Then imagine the recoil....Do these rounds buck that hard? You wouldn't have to worry about hitting your neighbor through 3 walls if you miss with the shotgun shells.

Not my cup of tea and a little too gimmicky. I would prefer a double action only pistol with light mount in 9mm or 40S&W loaded with some nice hollow points. Beretta 92 is a nice choice, older SIG P226 or P229, HK variants are all good.

But any handgun is better than no gun at all.

Friend of mine had a Taurus Judge, I fired it a couple times and was very disappointed after having practiced with my grandpa's .44 Magnum Super Blackhawk Ruger since childhood. Feels like a toy replica instead of a real firearm, like was mentioned the trigger pull and break suck and the cylinder ratcheting mechanism felt loose and light, in a bad way.

My dad wanted to buy a handgun a couple years ago, I did a lot of research and narrowed it down to a CZ75 or Glock. We both picked up a Glock in the store, held it in our hands for a few minutes... NAHHH way too light and top-heavy, we're used to shooting heavy full-frame stuff. My dad had always wanted a Beretta so we tried out a 92FS, fantastic firearm! After he bought it we took it to the range, I tell you I can do 6" groups at 50 yards at a pretty high rate of fire with that thing; it's so easy to shoot with the 9mm combined with the heavy-er full-frame design. I got used to firing my grandpa's Browning Hi-Power in 9mm and the Beretta wasn't much different. I tried a CZ75 in .40 S&W and the recoil was too much, I just couldn't keep the barrel rise under control and follow-up shots were slow. If I want power I'll use the .44 Magnum lol.

My wife's primary is a full size 1911 in 9mm. It is stupid fun to shoot.

On serious note and full disclosure I am actually a certified bonifide NRA pistol instructor. I get asked this question over and over and over. My answer is simply this. The best pistol for you is the one you are most comfortable with and have the most confidence with. If it is one you are proficient with and have confidence in. I usually tell folks to go to a large outdoor store and handle every one in the case. One of them will just naturally fit in their hand. That is a excellent starting point. Then focus on the ancillary topics.
 
I got a S&W Model 29 in .44 mag to clear a debt from my roommate back in 1990. Man it was huge: 10 5/8 barrel, rubber Pachmayer grips and 2 loaded speed loaders all in a case. I never fired it! I sold it ASAP as I didn't get any papers with it. I packed and shot a 1911 in the service until they brought in the M9 and we were all eager to turn in our .45 relics. The M9 shot so much easier, like shooting a .22 I have not fired a gun since I got out, hope I never have to. My boy has a SIG airsoft replica and a scoped pellet rifle, that's enough fun for me.

I like them. I like sigs too. I have a philosophy when it comes to firearms or anything else like tools or whatever. Buy the best that you can afford weither it's a high point or a sig sauer. And learn to use it and maintenance probably and it will be an effective tool. I started with the cheapest of the cheap guns. I'm talking Rossi Taurus high point cobra Jimenez etc. And if you know how to use it and train yourself with what you can afford it will be effective. I dont recommend the cobras and Jimenez pistols as they are crap and they dont last but for a truck gun to protect yourself they will go off once. After that it will probably jam and malfunction so make that first shot count haha.
I had good luck with high points they had excellent warranties and for the most part if you kept it clean the shot and functioned well. The only problem with high points I had was the magazines were garbage. That is 95 percent of malfunctions with handguns.

And choice of ammo in auto loaders. My Browning Buckmark does not like the hypervelocity hollow points. Those truncated bullets don't get along with the feed ramp. Normal hollow points/standards feed just fine. If ya like the feel of a 1911, that browning is just the .22 :D

I agree. I have had a few guns that where picky about some ammo. My 1911 and glock will eat anything I throw at it.

I had a boat tail hollow point load worked up for my 30-30 Marlin lever gun :D 1 in the chamber, 1 in the tube. That rifle really liked that load. I use that same load in my 30-30 bolt gun now :D

I have a 30-30 single shot I bought just to shoot PSP bullets. Lol

I`ve shot a dew diff glocks and diff calibers in them , not a fan either !

Wow you are one of the few people that have actually shot one and still not liked it. I see alot of haters hate them and have never fired one then they do and do a 180! I am one of those people I have to admit.
 
Going exotic? How bout a Saiga 12 12g semi auto shotgun...when you really can't aim, spray!
