I'm near firing up my 340 and realized a small leak around my water pump bolts, so I learned those reached the water jacket. Upon doing a bit of research I am realizing that there may be a few other in other parts of the motor. Do we have a guide indicating which bolts need sealant? Thanks in advance.

I think this is a Poly but it should help.

I never remember: Which is the hole that threads through the block for a pump and/or timing cover bolt, and which, if the bolt is too long, will bust into the #1 cylinder wall?

are washers on all the water pump bolts ??

Thread sealant, my favorite as of late is Permatex hi tack in the can with the brush, IIRC, all the water pump bolts are wet, and the end holes that are studded on the exhaust flanges are wet. As noted, water pump washers are a necessity, put a little thread sealant around the shank of the bolt at the head and on the backside of the washer too. It can get a little messy but it acts as a redundancy in case anything makes it past the threads.

You also need to look at which intake bolts thread into the heads in a location where they will get oil slung on them by the rocker arms. You need to seal them too, or you will have oil creeping the bolts and puddling on your intake. You can see where they thread into the rocker area.

So glad I was directed to this post due to the fact that I am going to be undertaking these exact projects this weekend! Thanks a ton for the informative information.

Post #3 is correct for the sealant. Your pump has less bolt holes because it is not a POLY.
The holes at 2-3 -9-10 o clock on your pump. (the four longest bolts).
Post #7 is important. If the bolts at 3 o clock and 9 o clock are to long they can go thru the cylinder wall.
All water pump bolts use washers. The pump is aluminum.
The 4 outer end exhaust bolts (studs) require RED RTV ! Front and rear on both sides. NOT Permatex! They get too hot.
Install the alternator brackets with the pump or you will be redoing two of the sealed bolts.

RTV is NOT a thread sealant......Period
Use the proper "thread" sealant.
IMO, this is the best.
