Hey guys after months and months of searching II picke up a 71 duster slant six automatic. This is my first real Mopar project so I have a lot to learn. My plan is to make it a Street strip car with a 8.75 rear end with a 904 and probably a built 360 for a motor. I really like the way the duster look with the meats in the back and skinnies in the front and thats how I want to get this sitting. I looked up different rear ends and noticed there are variouswidth 8.75s so I'm wondering what width rear end would be ideal to get Drag stance. Any thoughts, suggestions or anyone selling any 8.75 would be appreciated.
Thanks
Justin

Below is the stance I'm after

And this is where I'm at now

It looks awesome as it is, any other details?

Mine is the white one not the red one. Its an original AC slant 6 auto car. Its needs repainted but pretty straight and nearly rust free and actually runs and drives as it sits. Was gonna cruise it around in the mine time.

Yeah, I know.

Any other photos available before any changes are made?

Id bet the red car has mini tubs.

The way i did mine was pick out the rear wheels and tires. Install mini tubs. Lower car over new wheels with tires mounted. Center wheels and tires in tubs. Measure from inside to inside of wheels.
Subtract for break off set.

That is the width of your axle.

There realy is no set number as folks use different back spaceing. Some like a lot of back space others dont.

Oh ok. Did you have to cut into anything to mini tub it?

Yeah. Its aboit 2 or 3 days of cutting and welding depending how good you are.

I know dusters can fit a larger tire than darts but id bet the red car is mini tubed.

Fo-sure it’s mini tubbed.

Stance = The offset in height of the rear and and front end vs each other & against the stock ride height.

That red Duster looks as if it possibly has a 1 inch over bend on the rear springs with a slight upward height adjustment up front with what look like taller front tires with just enough to give the front enough height clearance for the tire with similar fender to tire distance.

Visit the wheel and tire combo thread (A sticky I think) to see what others have done to fit in the wider rear tires.

Below is my ‘71 Duster w/E- body S/S springs and 275/60/15’s and the wrong offset. I can’t remember exactly what the 8-1/2 wheels had for an off set, but the back spacing is IIRC, 3-1/2 or more inches. There typical wheels. From a Ford or a Chevy I forget.

It's all about how much tire you want to put in there. NHRA says you can not have tire sticking outside of the wheel well. Minnie tubs to the frame rail with the right offset rim will get a 28.5 x 11.5 M/T slick on a stock width axel with springs moved to the frame rail. you will have to clearance the inside fender lip, the forward rocker edge and maybe the rear rocker at the bottom edge..

Standard width a-body rear. Ralleys are 15x8 with 4 inch back space. 275 60 tires they will fit on your car with a factory rear

The weld wheels are 15x12 7.5 back space The rear is factory width The car is mini tubbed the the springs and wheel houses moved in three inches Tires are 29 14.5's.

This is a stock width 8.75 with 10 in. Centerline's, the quarters had to be trimmed for the drag slicks, it dosen't have mini tub's and the SS springs are in the stock location. 15x10 5 in backspace centerline, did have to use a 1/2 in spacer with 10.50 slicks to stop spring rub.

Lots of helpful info here. Thanks for sharing your set ups. I'll try to just go as wide as I can without having to go through any welding or cutting for now so i can move on and focus on finding and getting motor and trans built. Thanks again I'll post up what I end up going with.

Some nice cars posted , but the only way I`d ever run tires sticking out of the wheel wells would be to run bigger slicks at the drag strip , but think the nhra frowns on it , just looks bad ..
A 3/4" offset spring hanger kit , rolling the lips , and reconturing the front of the fender well /keeping the stock shape , and a little hammer clearancing up inside the inner fender will get a fair size tire "in" the fender well. The only welding would be the axle pads , u can cut a new one in half (exactly) and weld it beside the originals , using the orig. to keep the stock angle , and redrill a couple of holes , not a big deal ----------

295 60 15 drag radials and 295 60d15 treaded slicks -----doesn`t touch anywhere , even at speed .

Random question to an older reply. I went to order the rallye package like what you have but What brand rallyes are those? I can't seem to find any 15x8s with the 4"
backspace like you have...only 4.5
thanks

Justin, after you press the reply tag, look at the reply that comes in quotes, type on the out side of the quote tags. Above or below the quoted message. It inside the quote tags. It is easier to read %
YOUR reply and it is in a bigger straight up font, not smaller italic.
