I used to have all my extra hardware engine, body, misc all piled in one big assed box. If I needed anything it was a dump it out and scrounge thru it affair. After which I would scoop it up and dump it back into the box. Either I am getting older and wiser, or just dont want to deal with that anymore. Anyhoo, I began by separating out all the body bolts, nuts and clips from the rest, and also separated them into their own seperate piles based on thread. Using evaporust I soaked and cleaned everything. Then rinsed in TSP and water and layed them out to dry on my patio. Then I picked thru the hardware and pitched in the trash anything that was corroded to **** and not useable. I will still have to dump out hardware and sort thru what I need, but it will be a smaller amount to sort thru, and everything of the same size in one container. The containers were old food containers that had pretzels in em and cashews from Sam's. Smaller one had kids vitamins in it. Perfect to repurpose for hardware.

I still have to dump n sift, but I have got some sorted lol.(brake hardware, large bolts, carb etc)
Organizing feels good.
Nice job Matt

Nice! I bet I have wasted a hundred hours scrummaging through a box or tool box drawer looking for the right hardware. :BangHead::BangHead::BangHead:

I just recently did the same thing with my 6 totes of misc. Made a tote for engine, body, etc. created an Excel spread sheet with all the descriptions and quantities.

So nice to be organized!

When I was a kid, my neighbor payed me to sort all of his bolts and nuts into the same size. He took a couple of wooden 4 x 4's, and cut them into pieces about 2' long each. He then screwed pint Mason jar lids to the 4 x 4's far enough apart for the jars to have enough room to where they could be screwed on and off of the lids that were screwed to the wood. He mounted each end of the 4 x 4's to brackets that hung down from the low ceiling in his tool room. He could spin the 4 x 4's to find which jar had what he was looking for. I worked well, and when I get motivated enough to sort my own bolts....or pay some kid to do it, I want to replicate his contraption for nostalgia. Richard was a good man, and he passed away from cancer a few years ago. He was the one who taught me to not to be afraid to turn a wrench to fix something. R.I.P. Richard Davis! :thankyou:

Only took an evening or two to straighten it all out. But a few weeks of soaking in evaporust to clean em all up. Everytime I went in the shop. I'd give the jars a few shakes, then let em sit.

Looks like I'm not the only one dumping over boxes and trying to find the right part.
better idea you have moparmatt.

you like them pretzels! did you know they are brain food? in college, on the weekend before the BIG test which was on a book I had glanced over, I read the whole book while eating pretzels and drinking Dr.Pepper...got a B on the test. sorry, got carried away.
That looks great! I think I'm up to 4 5-gal buckets of bolts. you've given me inspiration. now, to find jars to put them in. Thanks! Bob

I'm sure you know, but Evaporust is temp sensitive- the warmer it is, the quicker it works. I love the stuff! Vinegar works also.
