Tom Hanks has Coronavirus.

Absolutely agree.
When I heard that I thought, toilet paper???
I probably have two weeks worth of old socks.:D

Seriously though, perfect info.

One part that kinda sucks is we really don't know how many are infected.
We know how many have been tested and how many of those died and those are the number we are going by.
When the virus infection count almost doubles in one day we can pretty much tell the virus is moving faster than we are.

Exactly. The published numbers are just cases we know about. Those numbers will get more accurate as time goes on, but especially in the "growth" phase the numbers lag behind. One of the early cases here in California was a "community spread" case. I think there were only 3 or 4 cases here at the time and the person had no contact with any known infected person and hadn't traveled. Meaning even at that point, when everyone known to have it here was being quarantined, there were already infected people out in the community that weren't known to the CDC.

As things go along the numbers will get somewhat more accurate. People that seek treatment and meet the criteria will get tested, deaths from respiratory illnesses will all get tested for the most part, so after all this is over we'll end up better numbers which will help next time around. But none of those numbers are ever 100%, just like for the flu. Most people experience covid-19 as a bad cold or moderate flu. So you know there are plenty of mild cases that won't be tested/diagnosed because the person will just assume they have a nasty cold. In comparison to the flu you can probably expect a similar number of unreported cases, so overall you can compare infection rates and mortality rates in retrospect.

Here's a great article on the ongoing outbreak, info on "the numbers" and where they come from (and why they aren't ever perfect). It's a LONG read, but has the latest up to date information compiled from accurate sources.

Most of the deaths in that nursing home in Washington state were with very old residents...average age 80..

If you are under 15 the virus does not do much harm. Just cold symptoms for 90% of the population.

The real death rate from this virus is 1%... less than any of the other flu's we have had in the last 50 years. Six cases here in WI.... one person has recovered. Hits the elderly who have resperatory issues.

This would be nothing to worry about if the press wasn't going nuts about anything and everything...

Exactly ! I watched a briefing by Prrsident Trump and said there were only 550ish cases confirm up to that point and only 46 of those people had died...
1%

Exactly ! And they were gonna go soon anyways...
Just think of the money we will save on entitlements !

46 people are murdered in Chicago every 6 weeks, does anyone care? Do they run out of toilet paper in the stores?

Check your math. That’s 8.4%

2009-2010 we had the swine flu. Up to 84,000,000 Americans infected. 300,000 hospitalized. 60,000 deaths here.

No mass panic.. no cancelled sports games, no school cancellations.

No excess media hype. Why? Could it be because of who sat in the White House? That guy had friends in the media...

Because the death rate was 0.07%. If had been a 1% death rate, it would have been 840,000 deaths.

That’s why there is so much concern about COVID 19 becoming as widespread as a normal flu virus.

:crickets:

1- yes, people care

2- the number of people that care outside of Chicago is really small, because they know it doesn’t effect them

Which is the whole difference. Violence in Chicago isn’t gonna bother the average person not living in Chicago. But the Coronavirus has the potential to infect pretty much anyone, so, a lot more people care.

And as for the toilet paper thing, again, nobody said stock up on that. That’s just stupid people being stupid.

60,000? And whose numbers are those?

According to the CDC it was more like 12k.

“These final estimates were that from April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010 approximately 60.8 million cases (range: 43.3-89.3 million), 274,304 hospitalizations (195,086-402,719), and 12,469 deaths (8868-18,306) occurred in the United States due to pH1N1”

source: CDC Novel H1N1 Flu |CDC Estimates of 2009 H1N1 Influenza Cases, Hospitalizations and Deaths in the United States, April 2009 – January 16, 2010

And, there was a TON of media coverage.

And some of what we’re doing now is a response to that- meaning, they figured out what we did wrong, and how we could have responded better so the disease won’t be so widespread.

And yeah, the death rate was lower. At the current 3.4% estimate, if 60.8 million people got covid-19 there’d be just over 2 million deaths.

It’s not apples to apples comparison.

Went to Wally World this AM, yep, totally out of toilet paper. Place was packed, we needed dog and cat food. OK so I stocked up on Cheez'tos or what ever they are too. So I go home and dig out all the old Sears and Roebuck catalogues I have been saving to put on FeeBay as they are my antique collection. Supplement my retirement thing. Saved for a rainy day. I can let them go. We already had 6 months supply of "striking paper before all this thing started anyway.
OK so you younger guys have no clue what about outhouses and catalogues!!

Yup. The women's underwear section was more readily available than the girlie mags.
No wonder my eyesight is so bad. Ha!

Wife and I had H1N1, that was 3 of the most brutal days...
Earths population lives longer so I see a larger % being more susceptible.
NHL apparently postponed their season....

More cancellations

@70aarcuda why the red x?
I got 2 in one day dangit lol.
The "white hats" here at plant are taking steps to minimize the chances of contracting/transmitting so cancelling tours is quite possible.
When this is all "done" lots of people will be saying "see there was nothing to worry about"....meanwhile it's the measures that they are criticizing that is helping to minimize transmission lol
Now that I know it bothers you to have a red X, I'm gonna randomly put one on your posts. :)

I didn't put this up to have a place to rant about dumb people or whatever your political views are. I posted it for the inevitable memes, jokes, etc.
I come to FABO for the knowledge that so many of you share, and maybe to help someone out if I can (which is rare that I'm in a position to do so), and maybe have a laugh or two.

That said, it saddens me that Hanks got this crud, when Justin Bieber is out there. :)

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to do the math . Lol

I am not worried about getting sick... just pointing out the reality of the situation .
The math does not point to a good situation and the panic ( however well deserved) does not help. Its the economic ramifications that worry me !
