I have my hinges apart for a pin and bushing kit from Resto Rick. It looks like he paints them after they are reassembled. This would be good for me as I still need to mock up my body to check gaps, etc. But it looks like it would be hard to get them covered in paint with all the contours.

Do you guys paint them apart or assembled?

What is the correct finish for the bolts?

Mine have some trace of body color on the cowl bolts but I can't tell on the door bolts. I would think the hinges were painted on the car at the factory but I don't recall ever seeing one where the hinges were painted to the door or pillar. Maybe they just didn't spray enough paint in that area to glue the hinges to the pillar?

I install the doors and get them aligned.. I then remove the bolts from the pillar only and paint the hinges with them on the door. From what I have seen disassembling them I think they were at least bolted to the body and they typically don't have paint between the hinge and body.... I am not really remembering if there is paint between the door and hinge.. The bolts are painted.

You can carefully airbrush in place as an option.
When I did the last car I painted the door hinges and cleared them and bolt heads hanging on a rack. Bolted them on after a week of dry / hardening then bolted the doors and fenders after setting gaps and covered them from over spray from the gaps during body paint.

I used a small detail gun on mine, worked great. Just used some single stage 2k. But yeah, the factory had them bolted on either the door or the car when they painted them. Cant remember which but they also didnt get very good coverage.

The doors were on the car when they painted them.. I prime the after rebuilding them but I do it before reassembly as that is when I pre lube them for my customers. I send a note to paint them body color before installation if that is easier for them. Just as long as they get painted before using the doors. Good luck on the pin job. Rick uses good pins. I also rebuild the door checks and rollers pins when I do a complete rebuild.

The good rebuild kit will have the right size pin so you dont need the bushing on all the pins like original. Cant remember, was it the lower that did not have bushings? New springs make a world of difference too since they are usually grooved.
