How old is Grandma

-
My great grandparents put running water in the farm house in the forties, with no bathroom in the house the stool was at the top of the stairs and the tub in the kitchen just like the neighbor's house. It was quite the novelty as a kid in the sixties.
Man Ahoey, you're bringing back memories! My grandparents cabin had no running water and a wood burning cook stove. The "night pot", or chamber pot kept in the communal bedroom was nicknamed The Thunder Mug for the reverberation it would make with a good fart. We kept the outhouse toilet seat in the cabin during the winter time so we wouldn't freeze to the seat.

The home phone was a party line. If it rang one long and two short rings, it was for our house. Two long rings was the neighbors'. Want to make a call? Pick up the phone and listen for a dial tone. Gotta make a call, and no dial tone? Politely ask the people talking to hang up. Our black and white TV had one channel. Life was good, man. A bike, slingshot, and a fishing pole, and you were king of the world! Be home by dark...
Just talking to father in law about this he’s 86. He told me power first came to his dads farm in 1950.

I am 72 and was born in 1948 my parents were in their 40's when I came along. I was raised by parents that were young adults during the real Great Depression. Dad walked to school, mom rode a mule there. My wife is 65 next month, she was raised by grandparents that went thru the Great Depression. Point is I realize neither of us think like people our age, we think like people 25 years older!!!! I had twin cousins 4 years older than me Their family got their first TV AFTER they graduated college. Their dad had a heart attack and died when they were 18 and had a little life insurance.
We have freezer full of food, rarely eat fast food, almost never eat out, a cubboard full of caned goods she has a dish washer, I have never had one ever, I was the dishwasher, my parents got uppidy and bought a window air condition that cooled the den in 1964, my mom bought me a set of new clothes every Sept to start school, she paid it off over the course of the year, a little every month then she found me a after school job when I turned 16 at the local A & P Supermarket 13 hours every Sat and every afternoon after school except Tue. She still bought my clothes!!!!!
I remember mom telling me NOT to have a heat stroke bucking bales, funerals costs a lot.

Did he have meningitis? That will not only take your hearing and it will also kill. Glad to hear he survived.

I'm pretty sure it was. It was a sore subject because the hearing loss made him ineligible for military service. All he'd wanted to do since he could remember was join the navy. He got over it, but it didn't get talked about.

I have no electricity or running water at my cabin. times are tough

Yeah and in my lifetime a Bugatti Chiron Longtail that goes 304 MPH is available. Space Adventure are selling seat for a trip to the moon for 150 million. A 70 Cuda Hemi convertible can be had for 2.25 million. Doesn’t mean they are available to me.

My point was that many of those things existed before 1952. There were nearly 17 million TV sets in use in the US.
With all due respect, the fact that you, or almost anyone else, can't afford space flights or cars that cost more than they'll earn in a lifetime doesn't mean they don't exist.

Life did seem simpler when I was a kid in the 60s.
But....Many of the social sins have been happening as long as humans have exhisted .
unmarried women still had sex and got pregnant . They were just hidden or had abortions.
People were murdered .
People did drugs and many more were alchoholics.
Children were molested.
Women were raped
People stole.
People cheated.
Wives were beaten more often.
Black people were lynched , beaten , killed and treated like animals

Bad things have always happened and many were more common back in the "good ole days". Just because Grandma was unaware of them doesnt mean theydidnt happen.

Ya people are stupid people are smart but one thing that people do is survive. We use the things we have to make our lives better. The things our great grandma, grandma, ma, and us remember are warm and fuzzies and for the most part keep us from doing the stupid stuff again. It’s 5 am will be sitting on a Walleye infested lake in northern Manitoba in an hour using the most up to date equipment we have which will be antiques to my grand kids. And they will say remember when. Life goes on. These are the good times grab on

Point is that people that are older like myself, we remember back decades ago, when yes lots in life was very different. Very different. If you were not there you will never fully understand. Different does not mean it was different in the same sense for everyone.
But I say this as time marches on and we as a society tend to find ourselves with more luxuries, more money, or more time for recreation, or maybe less respect, or integrety, or less inititive or less....life becomes easier but it does not always make us better human beings?
Sometimes less is more?

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandmother
About current events.

The grandson asked his grandmother what she thought
About the shootings at schools, the computer age, and
Just things in general.

The Grandmother replied, "Well, let me think a minute,
I was born before:
'television
' penicillin
' polioshots
' frozenfoods
' Xerox
' contactlenses
' Frisbees and
' the pill

There were no:
'credit cards
' laser beams or
' ball-pointpens

Man had not yet invented:
'pantyhose
' air conditioners
' dishwashers
' clothes dryers
' and the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and
' man hadn't yet walked on the moon

Your Grandfather and I got married first, and then lived together.
Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, "Sir."

And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, "Sir."

We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were those who closed front doors as the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends — not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CD's, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk.

The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's,and instant coffee were unheard of.
We had 5 & dime stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Ford Coupe for $600,but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

In my day:
'"grass" was mowed,
' "coke" was a cold drink,
' "pot" was something your mother cooked in and
' "rock music" was your grandmother's lullaby.
' "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's office,
' "chip" meant a piece of wood,
' "hardware" was found in a hardware store and
' "software" wasn't even a word.

We were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.
We volunteered to protect our precious country.
No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap.
How old do you think I am?

Read on to see -- pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

Are youready?????

This woman would be only 68 years old.
She would have been born in late 1952.
GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.

PASS THIS ON TO THE OTHER “OLD ONES.”
BECAUSE THE YOUNG ONES WOULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

Maybe born before some of this, but grew up as a kid with a lot of it.

Back in the day I knew every family up and down the block on both sides. 20 kids my 1/2 block. Always something to do outside.

Yea, and anybody's parent could give you a whack for being out of line. And then one of your parents would give you a whack because someone else had to whack you for being out of line!

I don't think the point was well taken. It was just for reference I believe. One thing I sure don't believe there were 17 million tv's in 52. Even if google said so. I still remember the first tv I saw it must have been a 12 inch screen. And I remember the first color tv. TV's were very expensive. Yes they existed in 52 but I just don't think some of you youngins get it.
