My brother-in-law!
He has a 77 Ford 3/4 ton camper special pickup. Low gears in rear.
He stopped by the other day and said he was having overheating problems.
As we talked abt it, he said he has to keep resetting timing!
I asked if his distributor was loose? He said no, he just needs to keep setting it back to factory.
I asked him what the number is, he said 0 degrees.
Just then his wife piped up with " He keeps putting in neutral at stops and revs the poop out of it"!
I asked him why he does that and he said he is trying to get it to run better!
I then watched him set timing...I said don't you think you should plug that vacumn line?
He said why?
This has been going on for sometime now.
I looked and it seems like he has been jumping time due to a wornout timing chain. Reason I believe that is his reving in neutral is causing chain to jump.
He said "I replaced chain back in 2014. How long should it last"?
I asked him how he found TDC on #1 to replace chain and his response was "HUH?"

Now there is a mech nearby who will replace chain and gears for abt $300.00!
I was going to have truck towed to shop from NC to Ga and he said " I will just drive it over". They have already been stranded from overheating a few times.
Then today they called me and said" We talked with my cousin Dave and a college guy who knows abt CARBS, and he said they need the headgasket replaced! This is a Ford 460. Two heads of course. Now these two don't have a pot to PISS in, but some guy said to change head gasket so they are leaning toward that! Incredible!!!!
They have no idea how big a job that is, besides expense for wrong reason.
So I said "Good luck, let me know how it turns out"!

P.S. I was going to lone them #300.00 to have mech replace chain, where the hell are they going to get money for 1 head gasket replacement?

My departed wife got them a cheap car and they complained they had to put abt $500.00 into it to make it reliable!
WTF is it with some people?

Rant over,, true story!
 
So which head they going to have replaced? Coin toss? Doing both is the protocol in my shop.
Some people are hard to figure out.
 
Reminds me of something that happened to me and my wife. My nieghbor teaches kids with learning disabilities and, she had a student who was getting ready to graduate and needed a car. The kids Dad was a no show Dad and, his Mom was some sort of an addict, he literally had nothing and, would of just been another statistic. My nieghbor said the kid had a job lined up starting the day he was finished school. Right about this time frame my Mother in law had passed and, we had her Chevy Lumina laying around. The Lumina wasnt much but it ran well and actually rode vrty nice so, we decided to give this kid her car to hopefully help this kid start a new story for himself. 3 weeks go by and, this kid has the nerve to ask my nieghbor to ask me if i would fix the air conditioning in the car and, he was whining hard about it not working. I told my nieghbor to tell him......NO!!!! ITS A FREE CAR!!!! Like you said...WTF is it with some people!!
 
You could give them a brand new car and they'd find fault. I know the type all too well.
 
I despise the people who come to you and ask you for your advice. In the end they ALWAYS do the opposite of what you recommend and then when it doesnt turn out well they complain about how bad life is. Some people are just not capable of making decisions.

Seems to happen on FABO a lot too.
 
I would rebuild transmissions for local racers !! I supply the labor they supply the parts !! But I would tell everyone if you want it quick take it some place else ! I’ll do it! But I will do it on my time not yours ! I had people call me 2 hours after they dropped it off !! Is it done is it done !! Generally I would get them done in 3 to 4 days complete ready to go back in !! So yes , What the Crap People !! People are hard to understand sometimes
 
several years ago, we had to buy the wife a new car
the old one was still good, but a little older and too small
so, i bought her a charger and i gave her old car (whose make and model will remain unmentioned) to her brother
i told him, i dont mind keep doing maintenance on this car, since i know all its quirks allready anyway but, i will be the ONLY one to touch it
he said fine

that worked out for about a year or so
then one day he asked me to take a look at it since it was running a bit rough
so i have him come over, and pop the hood
i take one look and notice 2 of the plug wires are different
(now, keep in mind i always buy the lifetime warranty autozone wires and replace the entire set when one of em goes, at least, on my beaters)
for two of those wires to be different, well that could only mean one thing
so, i closed the hood and told him i was done
and that, my friends is the last time i EVER touched that car
 
So my brother in law smokes more weed than Willie Nelson...he has a very warped sense of reality. We are the dumb ones for working so much and etc,etc, etc, as he works for cash, has no retirement, rents a house, no car, etc, etc, etc. We have had a couple issues in the past. Once my wife says she needs to tell me something and I had to promise not to be mad...lol...ya...that works. She said she went and bought him groceries because he was broke and had no food. I asked..does he have weed? "Yes" Then he got his priorities messed up. I told her that I'm not working 70 hours a week to put food on his table...never again!!! Fast forward about 5 years. He was here at my house all the time using my garage and, all my stuff to clean his truck or whatever. I needed a quart of transmission fluid and asked if he had any, he replied with, "Yes but, you need to replace it and don't buy me any of that cheap stuff".....seriously...he said that as he's standing there using my water, bucket, car wash soap, paper towels, shop vac, and, glass cleaner cleaning his truck and, when he gets hot he jumps in my pool. I WAS PISSED!!!! He would come over every Saturday and use all this stuff. I looked at him and said " Well mother f@#$%& you can put it on my tab!!" There was a falling out between him and my wife so, he doesn't come around anymore....I don't miss him at all!!!
 
Have two brother in laws. Ain’t worth a bullet. After many years fighting with my wife , I told her no more and if she wasn’t good with that see could pack her **** stay with them. She chose to stay. Life has been good ever since. That was about 20 years ago.

He "borrowed" a 15 gallon air compressor i have years ago. He didnt ask or tell...i needed it and it was gone. I drove to his house peeked in the garage and saw it sitting there. He wasn't home so i kicked the door in, walked in the garage and took it back. I also didn't ask or tell anybody. 2 weeks later he comes by and sees it sitting there and said he was glad to see it as he thought somebody stole it. I said thats funny....thats what i thought. He proceeded to ask if he could borrow it...LMFAO!!! I said not a chance in hell!!!
 
I used to have friends come over to use my shop. And tools. OK, that's what friends are for. They'd have their car on my lift doing a job they had planned for a week...sure enough, it would start. "You got any oil? You got any rags?"

They'd get kinda insulted when I'd say "Yes! I keep it 1/2 mile down the street at AutoZone!"
 
With my brother in laws, my policy for borrowing tools is, i will run over to wally world and buy them the cheapest version of what they want to borrow and give it to them

Its cheaper then replacing mine when they lose it (and they will) and less hassle then having the wife be mad at me
 
My friend Bob ran a trans shop for over 40 years...very sharp on all transmissions. From time to time, a dope would show up who knew hardly anything. He'd ask for advice (free) and Bob, being a generous sort, would carefully stop his work and take time to explain in detail what the dope had done wrong, how he should re-do it, and what to look out for when he did it. More than once, the dope would take it all in, then after Bob was done talking, the dope would reply, "Are you sure??"
 
The human race is overpopulated. Medical science, technology, and public assistance programs have allowed the above types to survive, where 200 yrs ago they wouldn't have.

I'm working on that issue with my eight year old. Let's hope I can pound the lesson into his head before his next birthday. I'd call that a win.
