hey guys
the jack on my boat trailer is on its way out
i noticed 3 or 4 teeth are missing out of one of the gears

is this something i can weld up and recut with a cutting wheel, or will a weld not hold up to the strain ?

(the jack is a shelby model 5756 and i cant find a rebuild kit for it)

Most gears have a surface hardening that make them last longer. Your idea can work. But it will most likely not hold up for extended use. Have a picture of the gear?

Too much tongue weight. Boat too far forward on trailer. Seen it way too many times.

i wonder if pulling it with a lifted truck without the proper drop on the drawbar was part of the issue ?

(best i know, the trailer was build for the boat)

Same thing happened to mine.
I punched the pin outta the stripped gear, and pulled handle off, discarded both handle and gear.
Welded socket onto remaining gear, and use electric impact, or speed wrench now.

I have taken 3 of various brands of those bevel gear jacks apart and they are all pieces of ****. If you take it apart, you will see that the ONLY thing that holds the vertical parts in the tube is a SMALL PIN driven through the top of the shaft and the matching bevel gear. If something breaks, like the gear or the pin, that whole mess will fall out of the tube. As far as I'm concerned, that design is crap, and all the Chinseoizationification'ots copy each other and push the bad design down the road, pun intended

"If there is a fix" I would go further than Inertia did, as it all still depends on a pin. Maybe weld a nut, I don't know....................

I think many of those bevel gears may be powder metal with some copper infiltrated so they probably not weld to well.
A search shows gear sets for Fulton and others. Measure what you have. Maybe someone copied the design and a competitors kit will work.

Just replace the gears with the ring and pinion gear from the 8.75 under your duster.

i guess there is no reason not to weld the handle straight onto the worm gear?

just to to make sure it clears everything

Well, here's the solution
I sectioned the handle so I won't slam into the winch when I use it

Then welded the handle back on the worm gear

All seems well so far, I just wish I had a grommet to put in the cover, but oh well

That type sidewinder jack sells at most trailer places, I got one to replace my topwinder after it failed on me in the up position with the race on the trailer & my truck stored off site. I took the cover off & it's plenty solid on the gears but I don't remember who the manufacturer is right now. Next time I go by the trailer, I'll get the name & let you know.
