This afternoon, I was by myself at the house. My son borrowed my car and the wife was out so the driveway was empty.
About 2:00pm I hear a crash. I run out to the shed to find the latch pried off and the doors standing open.
I look inside and see my bolt bin had been knocked over and thousands of nuts, bolt washer, etc. lying all over the floor.
I came out and find some kid (younger than me), hiding in the brush by the garage. I can see where he'd busted the garage door knob and had pried on the door, but didn't get past the dead bolt.
I just saw red and snapped.
I snatched him up and long story short, I honestly got a little carried away.
He isn't dead, but he's going to feel pretty bad for awhile.
I cut him loose, and didn't call the cops.
He beat feet and I didn't stop him. I spent the rest of the day waiting for the cops to come because he called.
I've been amped up every since. I haven't been like this since 2003 in Iraq. I'm pissed off at myself because I generally don't snap like that.

I haven't repaired the door or attempted to clean up the bolt bin (that's going to take forever to sort out!) in case the cops do come. I doubt they will, this ****** head isn't likely to bring attention to himself, but I don't know what others around him might do.

A few weeks ago, I found my ladder propped against the house under a window. That window has a "Charlie Bar" on it, so it won't open easy. I don't know if this is the same guy or not.

Just watch your stuff, they're out there.

He got off lucky
You did the right thing
I would serious think about moving out to the country
You are welcome here in Lake of the Ozarks
Thanks for your service and stay safe

you made one mistake, you didn't chop off his hands before you spared his life. lol
Maybe this guy will take value with your actions and try to better himself. you have given him the chance.

I'm glad you were able to catch him. If he would have gotten away without being noticed, he probably would have been back for more. And your family may have been home the next time.
Since you"made an impression" on him, I doubt he'll return.

I worry about reaching the point of no return myself, should something similar happen.

Red is not a good area. He and you are lucky you were able to control your extent. I'm glad you did. I would not consider yourself in the clear yet though. These people may play the "I'll get you" game too. In any case, good thing you didn't get too carried away.
I'm sure I would have done the same thing.

That's the thing, I live out in the country now. I'm not close to anything! He ran off into the woods. There's a road about 25 yards on the other side of the woods.
Just pisses me off that someone thinks it's ok to go into another property.

This is why I'm mostly upset.
I pride myself on being able to act rationally, stay calm and focused.
Even after I got hurt in Iraq, I stayed calm. It was never personal there.
When I saw that guy, all I could think was "he's going to hurt me, my wife and my grand daughter".

I think it's different when your personal space is invaded, your family is threatened, and your sense of security is broken. Most would more than likely do the same.

Just how old is this "kid?" Was he a minor? Even so, when someone is INSIDE a building, a LOCKED building, that raises self defense to a whole new level, Castle Doctrine or no

He was no minor.
Not sure how old he was. Looked like a bad night in jail, looked worse when I finished up.
Tomorrow I'll go talk with the neighbor. He lives on the other side of the woods. See if he saw anything or had any issues.

I live on a dead end dirt road. I think everyone in this "sub division" has a dog and a weapon. One neighbor has a sign on his garage "I own weapons and a backhoe".

U should have held him for the police , after thrashing his ***. U could always tell them ,"man down" to get then there quickly .

Two things. He may be gone and never return in fear of getting another tune up.
Or, retaliation is on its way.

better check with the neighbours.

You may have given him the best lesson he ever got. I would have snapped also and I havnt been through anything like you have. I think you are good.

First off, thank you for your service. Second off, sounds like he got what he deserved, don't be too hard on yourself.

No need to be hard on yourself at all..... Sounds like someone forgot to give him a tuneup or 2 early in life. He has no right to take what you have worked for..... Go ahead and bust that @#$........

Thank you for your service! I wouldn't looks any sleep over it at all. Hope it helped the kid.

I’m not exactly sure what I’d do in this situation. I also live out in the country, and hear about thefts and vandalism in the area, most during daylight hrs. Installed a security system a few yrs ago for a piece of mind when sleeping or not at home

Well, talked to the neighbor, he has cameras on his place. They caught the guy walking into his yard, he walked around his garage, peeked into the windows and walked toward my place.
Later you can see him running thru his yard and up the street. A moment later he's driving off in a blue Ford Taurus with the left headlamp out. We can't make out the plate.
My neighbor is pretty P/O'd as well.
My other neighbor is the head of the TWP EMT's here. He said he'd reach out and see if anyone was transported. He doubts very much I'll ever hear from this guy again. He's saying there's a new batch of ****** that's hit the area. We're not as affected, but the TWP over is getting hit pretty bad. Several OD's the past few weeks. he's said the same thing, not to worry about the guy. I might have hurt him, but he was able to drive away, so it wasn't to bad.
So I fixed the door on the garage, and the shed. I didn't do anything with the bolt bin yet. That'll take hours.
I'm going to make some calls tomorrow, I guess it's time to put cameras up. It won't stop anyone, but at least I'll see them getting into things. I also guess I'll bring the keys in out of the garage. I keep the keys to the Dart and Duster out there.
I hate this.

You have not a thing to worry about, liability or criminally. Hopefully he is thinkin right at this moment, "I'll never go back THERE again!!"

If you have good wifi, Arlo camera systems are pretty good and they're affordable. We've had a set for close to two years after somebody broke into a truck and they're nice to keep an eye on things.

It took a couple years but we have a bunch of wild roses and raspberries in our tree line. Nobody will be running through them.
