I just read somewhere that the Mopar '65 ABody VIN number on the door frame was welded on at the factory and what looks like rivets w/holes are actually just holes used for locating the plate.

An internet search usually describes the VIN plate as such:

"1964-65 models have the Vehicle Identification Number located on a stainless-steel plate riveted to the left front door hinge pillar post."

Who is correct?

Funny how in the "correct" article there is still a question whether a weld, adhesive, or crimp holds the VIN on. How could something so basic be such a mystery to this day?

Does the trunk drip rail of a '65 ABody have a number stamped anywhere? I can't seem to find on after my first look around there.

Well one thing's for sure. If you see one pre 66 that's riveted on, it's WRONG.

The factory VIN tag was spot welded in place. The holes in the tag was to center the tag cause on the A-pillar there was two places that was covered with a round dot. Reason was to make a good ground when the spot welding process started.

I'm not a welder, so I don't see any welds anywhere on the front/visible side. So are the welds on the back side of the plate or was it just a special quick weld that is not so apparent to the naked eye?

On your first picturrs you can actually see the two spot welds. On the second picture you can see that Chryslers SO number is thamped in the radiator support. 00054. Sometimes the fendertag has one date as it was actually a scheduled date. The actually assembly date is stamped before the 5 digits in the SO number.

Last fall I think, I had a great discussion with Don (65 dartman) re the SO number as he shows go good in these pictures. At the time I didn't know that the SO number was stamped in the cargo area in a wagon. I checked my Dart Charger convertible and Johans 65 Dart 270 convertible. We also talked about the VIN numbers location. Then I found new information. Checking the two bodies I found out that the cross bar between the rear wheel houses which at the same time is where the upper part of the backseat leans towards.
This crossbar has the VIN number stamped into it to the right of this picture. That is the only place I know of having the VIN# stamped on a 65 A-body.

I saw a documentary the other day on how ships were held together...

It was riveting...
