I have a set of 273 commando valve covers. One is a bit damaged and thought I might remove the chrome do-dad thing off the top and replace the cover as it’s probably a nightmare to repair. what holds them on? A type of epoxy? Can I just swap the chrome part with a non commando cover?

There adhered with adhesive, heat gun or oven temp them and remove. 65"

Yep..black adhesive..they will bend if pryed on without heat

Yall think heat makes 'em come off? You ever feel a valve cover after an hour or driving? Ask Leanne.......Hate to damage one by telling you the wrong way. I know its glue but how you soften it?

Heat and dental floss.
Heat to soften the adhesive. Dental floss to cut through it.

Someone was selling 2 sets of the fins recently. The adhesive reminds me of the mastic used to hang mirrors to a wall

It appeared to be the same adhesive that holds the glass in a outside mirror. Heat will soften it. I used a heat gun and a putty knife. I didn't bend the aluminum pieces either.

ok next question, these are 1967 vintage. is a stock 67 273 valve cover the same? (cant i swap the chrome to a stock 273 cover?) 67-8 same covers

The clips for wire looms are spot welded on standard covers.
