Jim (Racer Brown) recommended a cam

He may not be experiencing lifter failure. He is old school, and only uses new old stock or USA made lifters as far as I know. I have not experienced lifter failure, but I don't buy cheap cams, cheap lifters, or the latest rage in fast lift profiles, very light oil, and high spring pressures. All of which, I believe contributes to premature cam failure.


He told me solid lifters doubled in price.

honestly I know nothing about cams and only look at cam centerline, .050 duration, total duration, and lift. After that if buying a new cam I trust those I trust. I have been very lucky using the figures above buying used cams (roller only) over the years as they seem to work pretty good for me.

Oh I think you know more than you let on! :poke: I was just curious about that particular lobe as I had a custom cam ground by Isky a few years ago, (but changed plans and sold it not long after) that was very similar in specs, a hyd 286/240@.050” with .500” on a 106LSA (basically a lift limit circle track cam) a lobe down in their list that had a little bit more “area under the curve” than their typical hyd lobes.
 
I don't know if that is a fair assessment, the website is pretty comprehensive and very easy to navigate IMO.

Don loves to BS too. Lol. I usually get my cosmetic gaskets from Don. I tell him the bore and he recommends a bore size. Prices are more than fair.
 
This was my next hydraulic cam for my 340 6 pack. This cam is never really talked about but I believe it to be a awesome 340 camshaft

I love the cam Jim ground for my 5.9 Magnum, the performance and sound are fantastic. It did take longer and cost a tad more (like $30-50) but I have a somewhat oddball application (road racing, high altitude, only 9:1 compression, fairly tall gearing) so I didn't want to take a chance with an off-the-shelf cam. A good portion of the extra time was due to him needing to find a good roller cam core with the longer snout to drive an LA mech fuel pump, I offered to send the factory 5.9L cam to regrind (and just use the Hughes cam snout extension kit) but he said the surface hardening on factory cams is thin and he felt a lot better starting with a virgin core. I wasn't in a rush anyway I called to order the cam when the large parts for my build (heads, intake, short block etc) were sorted out but I was still in the process of gathering all the small stuff.

I'd order another cam from him in a heartbeat, I'm a younger guy but I like the old-school method of talking to a real person who is actually making the thing you're buying. At least for parts like camshafts which are so complicated and varied...
