Hi guys, I'm in the middle of swapping out my o/d gearbox for a non o/d one and noticed the bearing retainer on the non o/d trans is smaller.
Would just like to know what my options are? Is there an adaptor I can buy or have made up?
Or do I need to buy a bellhousing?
Thanks in advance.

pretty sure you can swap the bearing retainers . also brewers has the bearing retainers.

I don't think you can swap retainers. The OD transmission input bearing is large enough to pull the input shaft out from the front, the only A833 that you can do this on. The larger bearing required a larger retainer with a larger bolt circle. I think you have two options, get the correct bell or check on machining the opening in your bell housing to fit the OD retainer. I say check because I have never machined a bell housing for the OD transmission but I have machined an earlier Hemi bell housing to accept the later, larger bearing retainer and the larger hole came very close to the bolting for the clutch fork pivot.

I think that he's trying to go the other way: from OD to non-OD.
OP: You didn't say what diameter bearing and bearing retainer you're trying to use in the OD bellhousing, there are several different permutations that were used over the years.
Off the top of my head, you could check this out to see if it will fit your needs:
Brewer's Performance - Mopar A833 4-Speed Transmission and Component Specialists
But your best bet would be to contact Dan Brewer directly and tell him what you're trying to do. He'll know and have your answers.

You are absolutely correct. I misread the OP's post. In this case just have a filler ring machined and pressed into your bell housing. I've personally done that once. I did grub screw the ring in three places just for safety.

What i know is The o/d retainer diameter is the 4.807" and the non o/d retainer diameter is 4.354. So i need the adapter ring.
Thanks everyone for your input.

I just noticed this crack, do you guys think this is something I should be concerned about?
The trans is supposedly rebuilt.

I would chunk that retainer.

Also Brewer's performance is a vendor here. Go in the vendor's section and see what their username is and tag him in this thread. He'll reply and tell you what's what 100% instead of guessing.

That's interesting. I haven't had a lot of O/D A833's (one) but IIRC the retainer OD on it was around 5.125". Does your transmission linkage look like this?

Sounds like you may have the OD box with the 307 bearing.

I don't think you can swap retainers. The OD transmission input bearing is large enough to pull the input shaft out from the front, the only A833 that you can do this on. The larger bearing required a larger retainer with a larger bolt circle. An input shaft with the 308 bearing will also come out the front.

I must be getting senile. I remembered the input shaft gear not clearing the input bearing bore even with the 308 bearing. It's hell to get old.
Nope, the outside diameter of the 308 bearing is slightly larger than the input shaft gear so it goes in the front. Last year I completely rebuilt my tranny and replaced the input shaft. I pulled the shaft from a spare tranny and pulled the 308 bearing and installed the 307 bearing.

You have to take the whole trans apart to pull the input shaft on the small retainer, including the cluster gear. It's still a good trans, just a pain to work on. I used to break 2nd gear blocker rings all the time in the old days(didn't have a comp plus shifter with stops) all I had to do was pull the trans, side cover and input shaft to repair. That's how much easier the large retainer is to work on. The trans that is in my car now is the small retainer. Brewer has the adapter rings, I have one of them in my Lakewood.
